Tottenham Hotspur are in need of new signings if they are to avoid a repeat of the dismal 2024/25 Premier League campaign that saw them finish in 17th.
With Thomas Frank appointed as the successor to Ange Postecoglou and Champions League football confirmed for next season thanks to their Europa League triumph, Spurs chairman Daniel Levy must back the Danish tactician to the hilt.
There is a clear need to bring in new attackers in the summer if the North London club wants to build on the Europa League success next season under Thomas Frank.
Dejan Kulusevski was the standout performer for Spurs in the first half of the season but his form started dipping since the turn of the year. The Swede suffered a serious knee injury that forced him to undergo surgery, ruling him out for several months. This means he shouldn’t be ready to feature in the pre-season starting next month, along with James Maddison, who sustained a knee issue too before the Europa League final.
The Lilywhites do hold an interest in RB Leipzig playmaker Xavi Simons. He is open for a move in the summer after only joining RB Leipzig on a permanent deal from Paris Saint-Germain last summer. The Netherlands international was directly involved in 19 goals in all competitions this past campaign but it was not enough to help RB Leipzig qualify for Europe.
The lack of European football next season for the Bundesliga club could prove a key factor for the 22-year-old to depart, and given his talent and high potential, it is not surprising that Xavi Simons is no shortage of suitors. Now, GIVEMESPORT senior correspondent Ben Jacobs has confirmed that Tottenham do hold a genuine interest in the RB Leipzig star. He adds that no talks have started between any of the parties, but a move to the Premier League could be ‘one to watch’.
“So Simons and Premier League clubs could genuinely be one to watch. And I can confirm that Spurs like the player, but they’ve not started talks. They’ve not decided they’re going to bid yet. And again, keep an eye on the price. We’re going to hear a lot of Xavi Simons stories,” Ben Jacobs said on Last Word On Spurs podcast.
The acquisition of Simons would signal a statement of intent from Daniel Levy and Tottenham, demonstrating they are willing to back the new boss significantly in the transfer market to change the club’s fortunes in the league next term. Spurs’ qualification to the Champions League could make them a tempting prospect for the 22-year-old attacker.
Signing the Dutch star would offer the North Londoners a big boost, but RB Leipzig’s €80m asking price has the makings of ruining a potential deal. Such a high fee risks forcing Tottenham to scale back plans for reinforcing other vital positions in the squad.
That said, if the German club are ready to negotiate a lower fee, then Spurs must move forward in Simons’ pursuit. If not, they must find a cheaper yet effective alternative for the creative and versatile attacker instead to free up funds to address other problematic areas of Frank’s current roster.
