Celtic still hasn’t unveilled our new manager, but that hasn’t stopped the club being linked with players, the latest being Liverpool’s left-back Andy Robertson and Udinese’s midfielder Lennon Miller…
Both players will need no introduction, particularly Champions League winner Andy Robertson who has been one of the most consistent and successful players in the English Premier League in recent years, becoming something of a mainstay in a terrific Liverpool side.
The Scotland skipper who is also a self-confessed Celtic fan, was once on the books of the club as a youngster, and will undoubtedly be keen to don the hoops before his career comes to an end, but it’s a straight no from me, for several reasons.
Andy’s best days are clearly behind him, as we can see not just with Liverpool, but Scotland also.
We have Kieran Tierney and Marcelo Saracchi who will hopefully sign a more permanent deal, not to mention Hayato Innamura who has great potential, all of whom can fill the left back position. We could do without sanctioning a huge salary on a player whose career is in decline, money that would be better spent on other areas of the side.
One such player would be Lennon Miller. Former Motherwell star and Celtic target Miller, despite failing to impress in Italy is a young player with plenty of potential, and would be seen as a much more positive signing than the ageing Andy Robertson. It’s worth mentioning that the report linking Celtic – once again – will Miller – is vague and rather weak to say the least. However the point remains that he’s be a decent signing in my view.
Reports down south state that Robertson is set to leave Liverpool on a free transfer in January and he wants to return to Scotland to ‘give something back’ to the game north of the border before he finally hangs up his boots. And quite obviously he will see Celtic as his desired destination.
Andy Robertson has talked often about playing for Celtic, as we have often reported on The Celtic Star. “Every time I watch Celtic, I consider it. When you watch them and see a packed Celtic Park, as a fan you always have that dream.” Andy also said: “When I was at Queen’s Park I had a dream of still playing with Celtic and always dreamed of giving them my best years.”
Andy Robertson to me would be an unnecessary stop-gap signing whereas Lennon Miller would be a player who could play a major part in Celtic’s future, especially with Callum McGregor now well into his thirties.
That’s why I’d say no thanks on Andy Robertson but yes please to bring Lennon Miller to Celtic. I would also admit that the Robertson link is stronger and a move for him the more likely of the two. Would Miller up-sticks and move back to Scotland after half a season in Italy?
That seems unlikely, unless he’s been told he’s no longer on the manager’s plans. I can’t see that being the case for a boy who has bags of potential. Home sick maybe? Who knows. If he is going to become available Celtic should be all over it…
