Opposition manager confirms Manchester United striker has left club

Manchester United youngster Ethan Wheatley is set to join Bradford City on loan after the move was revealed publicly by Doncaster Rovers manager Grant McCann before either club made it official.

Speaking ahead of Doncaster’s early kick-off trip to face Bradford on Saturday, McCann openly discussed his opponent’s transfer activity and namechecked the United forward.

“They’ve signed Ethan Wheatley, whether he’s available… if it gets announced today (Thursday) or tomorrow (Friday), we’ll see,” McCann told the press.

While the timing raised eyebrows, the move itself has been an open secret in recent days, with all parties aware that Ethan Wheatley was heading for a new challenge.

The 20-year-old spent the first half of the campaign on loan at Northampton Town, where he gained valuable senior experience in League One.

During that spell, Wheatley made 22 appearances, scoring three goals and providing three assists, numbers that reflected steady progress rather than explosive form.

United opted to recall him earlier this month, believing a fresh test in a more competitive environment could better serve his development.

That decision now sees Wheatley make a significant step up the table, moving from a Northampton side rooted in 22nd place to a Bradford City team sitting fifth and firmly in the promotion hunt.

Bradford are pushing for back-to-back promotions, and United see the Bantams as an ideal platform for Wheatley to experience pressure football deep into the spring.

The Carrington graduate is no stranger to senior action at Old Trafford, having made four first-team appearances for Manchester United.

He made his debut under Erik ten Hag in a Premier League win over Sheffield United in April 2024 before earning further top-flight cameos.

Wheatley later featured for 10 minutes against Aston Villa and briefly against Arsenal, while also playing five minutes in a heavy 5-2 home defeat to Leicester City outside the league.

Those moments offered a glimpse of his potential but also highlighted the need for regular football away from United.

For United, the Bradford loan is less about short-term results and more about shaping a forward capable of contributing at a higher level in the future.
