Outgoing Milan Boss Stefano Pioli Drops Massive Hint on His Future

After dropping the curtain on his five-year stint at Milan with a 3-3 draw against Salernitana, Stefano Pioil is ready to embark on a new chapter. The Italian coach dropped a bombshell in the post-game interview, admitting his admiration for the Premier League amidst a managerial carousel on the island.

Pioli, who took charge of Milan in 2019 and guided them to the Scudetto in 2021/22, bid an emotional farewell to the Stadio San Siro on Saturday evening. Though the result wasn’t the best, as the Rossoneri couldn’t convert a two-goal cushion against one of the worst sides in recent Serie A history, the 58-year-old deserved a standing ovation.

After all, he ended the club’s decade-long title wait as a significant underdog. Things didn’t go his way in 2023/24, but Milan still improved on last season’s fourth-place finish by securing a runner-up spot behind uncontested champions Inter. Now is the time to say goodbye and continue his career away from San Siro.

“I’m studying English, and I’m keen on trying a new experience abroad,” the departing Milan boss said, as quoted by Fabrizio Romano. “Premier League could be a really nice and attractive opportunity, for sure.” 

Whether Pioli’s wish could come to fruition remains to be seen. Meanwhile, Milan have taken the necessary steps to replace him on short notice. Lille coach Paulo Fonseca is on the cusp of taking over the reins after leapfrogging Antonio Conte and Robert De Zerbi in the pecking order.
