Eintracht Frankfurt defeated West Ham United 2-1 in the first leg of the UEFA Europa League semifinal last week and took that advantage into Thursday's second leg held at Deutsche Bank Park in Germany.
Unfortunately, incidents that occurred before the match marred what was to occur inside the venue.
According to The Associated Press (h/t ESPN), German police say that over 30 arrests were made after supporters of the two clubs were involved in multiple altercations. The AP story notes that police intervened "at several locations" on Wednesday night to handle skirmishes involving rival fans, and a group of Frankfurt supporters allegedly had baseball bats when they approached West Ham fans at a pub.
"The rival fan groups kept looking for violent clashes, which the police prevented by quickly intervening, especially in the station area. Despite that, there were physical attacks elsewhere," police said in a statement.
Per the AP and BBC Sport, at least two West Ham fans were knocked unconscious and later hospitalized. The BBC adds that a group of individuals "wearing Eintracht Frankfurt colors" previously attacked West Ham fans on Tuesday night.
In the past, UEFA has held clubs responsible for the actions of supporters inside of stadiums. It's unclear if the governing body would sanction either team regarding this week's reported events.
