Paris Saint-Germain never responded to final Real Madrid bid for Kylian Mbappe?

The biggest remaining saga of the summer transfer window ended not with a whimper, but with silence.

Sky Sports and also ESPN's Alex Kirkland and Rodrigo Faez report Paris Saint-Germain failed to respond to a Real Madrid bid of €200 million ($236 million) for star forward Kylian Mbappe. According to Sky, the Spanish giants were willing to go up to €220 million to get their man this summer but ultimately walked away from the negotiating table before the transfer window closed Tuesday night in Spain and France when it became clear the Parisians weren't selling the 22-year-old.

Such updates arose roughly 24 hours after it was learned talks between the clubs about Mbappe were at a standstill.

It seems likely this story ends with Mbappe completing his desired move to the Bernabeu but one year later than he hoped. He is out of contract following the current season and, thus far, has rejected all offers to prolong his stay with PSG. Unless he signs an extension by the end of 2021, he will be able to put pen to paper on a pre-contract agreement in January with Real or any other club and then officially join that side next July.

ESPN did note on Monday that "there is concern in Madrid" Mbappe's teammates, most notably Lionel Messi and Neymar, could convince him to sign a new deal with PSG before the clock strikes midnight on New Year's morning. That's a risk Real accepted ahead of September.
