Parma goalkeeper Zion Suzuki heaps praise on his former teammate and current Inter Milan striker Ange Bonny.
The two players simultaneously burst onto the scene last season following the Crociati’s promotion to the top flight in 2024.
Bonny had been plying his trade in Parma since 2021, so he was itching to finally make his presence felt in Serie A. On the other hand, Suzuki was still a newcomer, but he immediately cemented himself as a regular starter.
It only took the two young men a few weeks to become recognisable names among the Calcio community: The Japanese custodian gained fame for his superb saves and unorthodox playing style, while his French teammate was causing damage at the other end of the pitch.
But while Suzuki ended up dwelling at the Ennio Tardini, Bonny earned a summer move to Inter. Therefore, the latter has been handed the opportunity to play at the highest level, and even make his mark in the Champions League.
He has certainly been making the most of the opportunities coming his way, as evidenced by the three goals and four assists he registered in his first 10 appearances for the club.
However, the situation could drastically differ in the summer. Aside from injury or any other unforeseen circumstances, Suzuki will be part of Japan’s World Cup squad.
On the contrary, Bonny has only been active with France’s U21 side, and has yet to make his senior international debut. And amidst the stern competition for places, the youngster is unlikely to break into Didier Deschamps’ squad ahead of the global tournament.
In fact, Bonny’s best bet of earning a WC ticket is to declare for his country of origin, the Ivory Coast. But before heading to the World Cup, Suzuki realises he must continue to deliver the goods for Parma and work on refining his skillset.
“I want to become one of the best goalkeepers in the world, and I’m very focused on Parma and the World Cup,” said the 23-year-old in his interview with Il Corriere dello Sport via FcInterNews.
The custodian also recalled his former teammate, Bonny, emphasising his great physical strength.
“Signing for Inter was big step up for him. Having played alongside him for a year, I realised how strong he is. We won’t meet again until January.”
Parma will host Inter at the Tardini on June 7, before returning the visit on May 3.
