Patrick Dorgu has spoken about a first-team Manchester United player under Ruben Amorim following the 0-0 draw with Leeds United on Saturday.
Capable of playing on either side of the defence, the 20-year-old Danish wing-back joined Old Trafford in January from Italian club Lecce. United paid around £25m (€30m) for Dorgu, with an additional £4.1m (€5m) in potential add-ons included.
He has been Ruben Amorim’s first choice at left wing-back since his arrival, fitting into the system used by the 40-year-old manager.
However, the No. 13 started on the bench during United’s pre-season opener against Leeds at Strawberry Arena in Sweden over the weekend.
Amorim opted to start new signing Diego Leon at left wing-back in the goalless draw but brought Dorgu on at half-time to replace him.
Rasmus Hojlund had a difficult time in his second full season at Old Trafford, and now the 22-year-old forward has started to draw interest from clubs abroad, especially in Italy.
The Manchester United striker returned to pre-season training at Carrington earlier this month and has made it clear that he wants to stay put.
Inter Milan are among those interested, while Roma and AC Milan have also been linked with the Denmark international.
There’s speculation that Ruben Amorim might look to sign a new striker this summer, leaving questions about whether Hojlund fits into the manager’s plans long term.
After the goalless draw with Leeds United in Stockholm, Patrick Dorgu said that Rasmus Hojlund is determined to turn things around at Manchester United.
“I think most of the players had a step back last season,” he said, as per the Manchester Evening News.
“I think everyone wants to redeem themselves this season and I think Rasmus is the same. I have more to bring to the team, more to give. I’m just getting ready for the season, using all these pre-season games to get fit. Hopefully we’ll see the best of me and of us in general.”
Amorim was left frustrated by United’s striking options last season, with both Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee struggling to make an impact.
Rasmus Hojlund, under contract with Manchester United through 2028, wrapped up a challenging campaign last season with 10 goals and four assists over 52 outings in all competitions.
In the recent friendly against Leeds, the Danish striker began on the bench and entered at the break for Chido Obi, but his performance fell flat, doing little to influence the match.
There are still several pre-season matches on the horizon, giving Hojlund a narrow window to convince Ruben Amorim that he’s worth backing as the club’s leading man up front. How he performs in the coming weeks may well define his standing at Old Trafford heading into the new season.
