Paul Scholes has weighed in on who he would like to see as the next Manchester United manager.
Ineos have brought an end to Ruben Amorim’s 14-month spell in charge, leaving the club back on the hunt for a new boss.
Darren Fletcher is holding the reins for now, but United are looking to move quickly to bring in a permanent replacement.
Several names have already been floated, including Oliver Glasner and even a possible return for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
Zinedine Zidane is another name that keeps coming up. Speaking on The Good, The Bad and The Football podcast, Nicky Butt and Scholes agreed that the Frenchman would be an intriguing candidate.
Scholes has now named his preferred option.
The former Manchester United midfielder mentioned three managers who catch his eye, with Unai Emery and Andoni Iraola among them.
But he singled out England manager Thomas Tuchel as his top pick.
Scholes thinks Tuchel has the presence and experience needed to handle the pressures that come with managing United.
“Number one for me which I’d do in the summer is Thomas Tuchel, all day long,” he said.
“I think Tuchel would bring the very best out of them.
“His contract with England is only to the summer.
“I think he can be a bit temperamental and he can be difficult to handle, but he’s done it at big clubs.
“He’s turned England around as well… England do look a lot better under him,” Scholes concluded.
The timing poses a potential problem, as the World Cup concludes on July 19.
If England make a deep run in the tournament, it would give him little time to prepare for the new club season.
While Scholes is in favour of Thomas Tuchel as Manchester United manager, he does have some doubts about his style of play.
“His football is very possession based, and a little Man City. That’s my only reservation,” he added.
This is not the first time Tuchel’s name has come up in connection with Manchester United, even during the Ineos era.
Back in the summer of 2024, Sir Jim Ratcliffe held discussions with him while reviewing Erik ten Hag’s position, though no agreement was reached at the time.
Now fully committed to his role with England for the 2026 World Cup, it remains to be seen if the timing would align for a move back into club football.
