Pep Guardiola believes his star pupil will become a leader at Manchester City

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola believes his star pupil Phil Foden will eventually take over at Manchester City as leader. This season has seen Foden’s game mature as he has taken on a bigger role in Pep Guardiola’s side. He was the key figure in City’s 3-1 win over Brentford as his hat trick sealed a vital three points for the champions.

Since breaking into the Manchester City first team set up Foden has learnt from some of the best leaders in the game. He has had the opportunity to develop his game under the leadership of Vincent Kompany, Fernandinho, David Silva, Ilkay Gundogan, Kevin De Bruyne and Bernardo Silva while learning his craft.

Foden has clearly learnt from his illustrious teammates. This season has seen the England international become a leader on the pitch for City through his play. He has become influential with his play and was seen orchestrating play during City’s win over Brentford. That feature of Foden’s play has been the next step in his evolution as a footballer.

Speaking following his side’s win over Brentford Pep Guardiola believes his star pupil will become a key leader for Manchester City. Guardiola told the media: “He will take over from Kevin and Bernardo in the future – that is going to happen. It’s a question of process. Every season the experience he gets, he will have to lead for the other ones. Still, he is being led but there will be a moment.”

Based on Foden’s performances this season and in particular his display against Brentford the moment Guardiola speaks of appears close to becoming a reality.
