With the form having dropped and fan frustration growing, Tottenham Hotspur boss Thomas Frank is considering freshening up his squad in the January transfer window.
Despite adding the likes of Mohammed Kudus, Xavi Simons, Mathys Tel and Randal Kolo Muani to their frontline during the summer, things haven’t really clicked well for the Lilywhites in the final third. After 19 Premier League games, they have scored just 27 goals and Thomas Frank was booed by the travelling Spurs fans following the boring 0-0 draw with Brentford on New Year’s Day.
On Friday evening, Tottenham confirmed the departure of Brennan Johnson to Crystal Palace. It is a club-record buy for Crystal Palace, having splashed £35 million to secure the Wales international’s services. The north Londoners must replace Johnson in the squad in this ongoing transfer window, and one of the names on their radar is Manchester City winger Savinho.
Spurs were prepared to break the bank to bring Savinho in from Manchester City during last summer’s transfer window, but the move was blocked by head coach Pep Guardiola. The north Londoners have maintained an interest in the Brazil international, who has struggled for regular minutes at the Etihad Stadium this season.
Last week, reputable journalist David Ornstein revealed that Man City have no desire to listen to offers for Savinho during the winter transfer window. Pep Guardiola wants to keep the young winger as part of his squad in a bid to challenge for multiple trophies. And now, any little hope of signing the 21-year-old appears to have been dashed.
After Man City’s 0-0 draw with Sunderland on New Year’s Day, Guardiola hinted that Savinho might be set for a period on the sidelines. The Brazilian attacker was subbed off after 51 minutes against Sunderland, being visibly in pain as he walked off the pitch.
“With Savinho, it doesn’t look good, I would say,” Guardiola was quoted by the Manchester Evening News, as he shared a concerning update on the Brazilian.
A possible serious injury makes Savinho’s departure in January much less likely, despite Tottenham’s interest. If Ornstein’s claim was not enough, the South American trickster now looking set for a spell on the sidelines should end Tottenham’s pursuit of him one for all, at least in this transfer window.
The time has come for Spurs to turn their attention to alternative options in the market if they are serious about signing a new winger to replace Johnson in Frank’s squad. Recent reports suggest the Lilywhites are planning to revive their interest in AS Monaco star Maghnes Akliouche.
