'Permanent state of revolution' predicted at Chelsea by journalist who thinks spending won’t stop

On 5 live tonight, there was an interesting debate about Chelsea’s future.

So far, in the 18 months since the Clearlake Consortium headed by Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali took over, it’s been essentially endless spending, with transfer records shattered in every window.

Rory Smith, commented that he thought the spending wouldn’t stop. His theory is that the owners will keep going, and you’ll get a team that never reaches the stability it needs to actually be any good. We really hope not. That’s not the recipe for a successful team, as we’ve seen proved countless times.

“Do you think Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali will not spend money next summer? Because I don’t. I think they will go and spend again and you’ll get this team that’s in a permanent state of revolution,” the journalist said.

We see what he’s saying, and we certainly wouldn’t rule it out. However, given Clearlake have bought the club as an investment, it seems unlikely that they will continue to pour money in indefinitely. Every billion they spend is another billion they have to make back in the future, if they ever intend to turn a profit.
