Manchester United’s last few seasons have tested both the levels of pain and patience of the fans. Finishing 15th in the Premier League 2024/25 proved to be a bitter chapter in the club’s history. Losing to Spurs in the Europa League final and losing a place in the European Competitions have not kept United fans quiet. Ruben Amorim took the bench mid-season, but he couldn’t stop the shocking decline. Now the team are in a storm of changes before the 2025/26 season begins, where the transfer market will determine the future direction.
High-profile names like Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo have joined the squad at the beginning of the summer. Young Diogo Leon has been signed as a hope for the future. These signings have aroused passion, but there are also whispers of departures for the club’s financial balance. Amidst all this, there is one name that has increased the speed of the fans’ heartbeats.
In Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast, former Spurs goalkeeper Paul Robinson revealed that Tottenham are interested in United’s young midfielder Kobbie Mainoo. However, the situation is calm at the moment. He stated that the 20-year-old Mainoo played an important role in Amorim’s plans by playing 25 matches in the Premier League in 2024/25.
According to Robinson, the player’s camp is sending the message that his entire focus is on staying at Old Trafford, and so there is no talk of a transfer. However, Tottenham’s ‘muted interest’ remains. Earlier, we reported in our blog that United had even revealed the transfer price that they will demand for Mainoo, and hence this is a good shift in stance.
“The Kobbie Mainoo situation has gone extremely quiet,” he told Football Insider.
“He played 25 Premier League games last season and was a big part of Ruben Amorim’s plans, and he’s been away with the team in pre-season.
“The words coming out from the Kobbie Mainoo camp are that all focus is on Man United.
“So I wouldn’t be surprised if he was there for another season.
“There’s no word of a new contract coming out for him, there’s been no word that he’s in talks for a new deal, and there’s no word that he’s in talks over a move.
“There’s been muted interest from Tottenham, another club that have been linked with him.
“He’s a top-quality young player, but at the moment all is extremely quiet.”
The English midfielder’s biggest strength is his maturity and composure. He possesses clean ball control, the ability to push forward through the press, and provides creative passes in the final third, giving a unique balance to United’s midfield. Despite being young, Mainoo does not lose confidence in big matches. This is the reason why every transfer rumour linking him fills the hearts of United fans with restlessness.
United have experience, but the soul comes from a player like him. If the 20-year-old is sold, the pivot in midfield that combines pace and control will be broken. New manager Amorim is now planning for the first time in a full pre-season. Playing Mainoo in the left double-pivot in his 3-4-2-1 system could allow him to form the backbone of the team as a ball-progressor.
Mainoo could move forward and distribute decisive balls to Cunha and Mbeumo, while the structure at the back could be balanced by an experienced player like Casemiro. United should not rush into this rebuild. Allowing Kobbie Mainoo to grow with Amorim’s tactical philosophy for the next two seasons could help Manchester United not only recover but also become the pride of English football again.
