Football, as time progresses, is increasingly becoming a financial arms race. Clubs across the globe are all trying to get a leg up on their rivals financially as they look to sign the sport’s newest superstars.
Today, we’ll be looking at the five most expensive footballers of all time, based on the cumulative transfer fees paid to sign them. Three of the players on this list have graced the Premier League over the course of their respective careers – can you guess who they are?
At Barcelona, Ousmane Dembele looked like one of football’s biggest flops. The Catalonians signed him for well over £100 million, to mixed results at best. Nevertheless, the French international has justified his position as one of football’s most financially lucrative players at PSG.
Dembele now has a Champions League medal and a Ballon d’Or to his name for his exploits last season. One of the world’s most effective wingers, he will surely make his mark at the 2026 World Cup.
Joao Felix is something of an enigma. He has been one of football’s most coveted players for several years now, despite delivering mediocre returns at several of the clubs he has signed for. With that being said, his natural flair and ability speak for themselves.
At the age of 26, Felix is currently at Al Nassr – this does not bode well for his future prospects. Before this, he has played for teams such as Atletico Madrid, Chelsea and Benfica.
Arguably the most famous footballer of all time, it should come as no surprise that Cristiano Ronaldo lands a place on this list. The only surprise is that he isn’t number one, despite his many head-spinning transfers over the years.
Ronaldo established himself at Manchester United and became a global megastar at Real Madrid. At the time, his £89m fee paid to see him move from United to Madrid was the most expensive transfer ever.
Here’s a name you may not have expected to pop up – Romelu Lukaku’s persistent desire to move around to different clubs has bumped up his overall cumulative transfer fee dramatically.
A powerful striker who has been at clubs such as Everton, Napoli and Inter Milan, Lukaku has been the subject of criticism at several points in his career. Despite this, he has played for some of the biggest clubs in the world over the course of his illustrious career and is still performing at the highest level of the game.
Neymar tops this list – not only is he the most expensive footballer of all time in terms of cumulative transfer fees, his move from Barcelona to PSG remains the most lucrative transfer deal in football history.
Could Neymar have achieved more during his time as a professional? Perhaps – but his big name status and unrivalled dribbling ability have given him one of the most storied and glamorous careers in the history of the sport.
Sadly his spell in Saudi Arabia at Al-Hilal was blighted by injury but he certainly got paid handsomely and raised the profile of the League despite them not seeing the best of him on the field.
He’s now back home in Brazil playing for Santos but what an amount of money has changed hands between clubs to sign him.
