Johan Manzambi is a player who has been linked to Manchester United in the 2026 summer transfer window.
The 20-year-old, who came through the ranks in Germany at Freiburg, has had a significant amount of interest around his name, but one club has led the race all summer.
Newcastle United had been told they fronted the race to sign Manzambi, with personal terms and a transfer fee in place for some time.
Eddie Howe’s side have already lost star player and Manchester United target Sandro Tonali to Tottenham Hotspur this summer, and fan favourite Bruno Guimaraes wants a move to Arsenal.
The only thing standing in the way of Newcastle United pushing ahead to rejuvenate their midfield with the signing of Johan Manzambi was the player’s decision.
In the latest twist, it appears Manzambi has made that decision – and it won’t be to head to the North East of England, but the Midlands.
According to David Ornstein for The Athletic, Aston Villa are in the process of finalising a move to sign Johan Manzambi.
After the disappointing news of a knee ligament injury to midfielder Amadou Onana, Aston Villa decided to make their swoop, and have hijacked Newcastle’s transfer.
Manchester United have had long-term interest in Manzambi, but other targets have clearly been ahead of the 20-year-old for them this summer, even after their missing out on Mateus Fernandes, another player who ended up in North London with Spurs.
Johan Manzambi played against Aston Villa for Freiburg in the 2026 Europa League Final, where Unai Emery’s side came on top in a 3-0 win, securing UEFA Champions League football – something Newcastle won’t have next season.
It looks to have been a deciding factor, and has ruled out any potential move for Manchester United to sign the player they’ve long admired.
