Premier League fixtures released: Match times, dates confirmed

The English Premier League will finally return to the pitch on June 17 after months of being paused due to the coronavirus pandemic. Fixtures were announced on Friday for the first three rounds of the restarted season, and the league will kick off with Aston Villa vs. Sheffield United and Manchester City vs. Arsenal to open the season resume.

The first full round of fixtures will begin with Norwich vs. Southampton on June 19 and the leagues' chief executive officer couldn't be more excited for matches to resume.

“We are pleased to provide fans with further updates on the provisional restart of the Premier League season,” said the league’s chief executive Richard Masters, according to The Guardian. “I am delighted we are able to take another positive step towards the season returning in just under two weeks’ time.

“We know it won’t be the same without our loyal supporters in stadiums but together with our broadcast partners, we are able to ensure fans can watch or listen to each match live from home."

Like Germany's Bundesliga, clubs approved a temporary amendment to the laws of the game by allowing five substitutes per game instead of the customary three. The moves can only be made in three increments, so five individual substitutes are not allowed.

With expanded substitutions also comes larger matchday squads. Clubs can have nine players on the bench in uniform as opposed to the customary seven. The use of neutral venues also will be in play, however, no matches for neutral sites have been confirmed yet.

Germany's Bundesliga's successful restart probably played a role in the Premier League aggressively pursuing a resume to the 2020 campaign. Other soccer leagues around the world also are set for a resume, including Serie A and La Liga.
