Arsenal have been linked with a move for an unlikely face – the Gunners want to sign 18-year-old James Wilson from Hearts on transfer deadline day.
Interestingly, the Gunners are pursuing a loan deal, rather than a permanent one. This could, of course, include a mandatory fee at the end of the loan – nothing has been finalised as things stand.
It seems odd that Hearts are willing to let him go at this stage. The Jambos are currently in the midst of a do-or-die title fight in the Scottish Premiership – additionally, their star striker, Lawrence Shankland, has recently been ruled out with an injury.
Currently, Hearts are sitting at the top of the Scottish Premiership table, with six points between them and Celtic and Rangers.
Of course, when a club of Arsenal’s size comes knocking, it’s very hard to ignore them. If Wilson wants to move to the Emirates Stadium, Hearts’ hands could be tied. It’s worth noting that the Scottish transfer window closes at 11pm, rather than 7pm – this will give Arsenal extra time to complete a deal.
While Wilson is still very young, he is no stranger to first team football. His playing time in 2025/26 has been limited, but he scored five goals and notched up a single assist over the course of 20 Scottish Premiership appearances in 2024/25.
On top of this, he has also been a star for Scotland’s U21s team, scoring four goals in five international appearances for his country.
Previously, he has also represented Northern Ireland at U17s level – he was also eligible to represent England. Despite this, he declared his allegiance to Scotland in March of 2025, making his first senior international appearance for the Tartan Army later that year.
When he made his senior debut for Scotland, Wilson became the youngest player to ever respresent them, at 18 years and 17 days. This broke a long-standing record of 138 years set by John Lambie, who was Scotland’s previous youngest-ever player.
As things stand, Wilson is under contract with Hearts until the summer of 2027, with an option to extend it by a further year. Due to this, the Jam Tarts will likely command a substantial figure if the Gunners look for a permanent deal.
Arsenal’s methodology behind pursuing a loan deal, as opposed to a permanent one, is unclear. Arsenal certainly aren’t bringing him in for squad depth – if he is struggling to get into Hearts’ team this season, he certainly won’t make an impact in North London any time soon.
This season, Wilson has yet to score a goal in the Scottish Premiership, making just six appearances in Scotland’s top flight. He has, however, scored a couple of goals in the Scottish League Cup.
This is more likely to be a ‘try before you buy’ type of deal. Arsenal are clearly admirers of the youngster – they probably want to see him in training before they make a move to sign him on a permanent basis.
With this being said, there is no confirmation that an option-to-buy clause will exist in his contract as of yet – this is merely speculation.
