Tottenham Hotspur could potentially have one of the most exciting midfields in the Premier League next season if they can secure the signing of Nottingham Forest star Morgan Gibbs-White.
Spurs triggered Gibbs-White’s £60million release clause in his contract, and he was due for medical last Friday. However, events took a dramatic turn as Nottingham Forest sought legal advice against the Lilywhites, asserting they had approached their player illegally without their permission. As a result, the deal is now on a standby.
It looks like Tottenham have switched their focus towards improving their midfield unit after the acquisitions of Kota Takai and Mohammed Kudus. In addition to Gibbs-White, they remain open to signing players who are versatile in nature and can make things happen in the final third. This has been evidenced by the North London club’s interest in Aston Villa midfielder Jacob Ramsey.
Jacob Ramsey has come through the Aston Villa academy and been playing men’s football for many years now. However, the midfielder is unhappy at Aston Villa and would be open to an exit to enjoy regular game time elsewhere. Indeed, the Englishman struggled for regular starts last season, managing just 25 across his 45 appearances in all competitions, as Unai Emery preferred others ahead of him in midfield and wide areas.
The 24-year-old has two years left on his contract, and talks over a new deal have not progressed so far. Aston Villa are under pressure to generate revenue after missing out on Champions League football for next season. They may be forced to sell their homegrown players to stay on the right side of PSR, and selling Ramsey would be considered as pure profit in the account books as well.
Now, according to TBR Football chief correspondent Graeme Bailey, Ramsey and Villa are considering whether parting ways this summer would be beneficial for both parties. The chance to play in the Champions League is extremely appealing to the midfielder amid interest from Tottenham and Newcastle United.
“Jacob Ramsey is a huge talent, nobody has to tell Aston Villa that,” Bailey exclusively told TBR Football.
“But he is central to their plans? Maybe not, and the player knows that.
“Sometimes a move can just suit a player and a club, and this could be one of those instances.”
Ramsey has mostly been used in a wide role by Unai Emery and his predecessors at Villa. He can also operate in a No.10 role and as an attacking No.8, which could make him a good alternative to Gibbs-White.
If a deal for Gibbs-White fails to come to fruition, Spurs must then go for Ramsey. In James Maddison, Dejan Kulusevski and new signing Kudus, Frank has a plethora of creative options who can operate in multiple roles. Until and unless the Gibbs-White is not resolved, there is no point making a move for the Villa man.
