Even though Liverpool FC’s deadline day approach for Marc Guehi did not end in our favour, Arne Slot could rely on a strong core of four centre-backs led by Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate. That comfort has now diminished, as Giovanni Leoni is set for a long spell on the sidelines following a serious knee injury suffered against Southampton.
The squad now has three senior centre-backs, a number that has caused problems in the past. In 2020/21, all of Liverpool’s senior defenders saw themselves sidelined by January, forcing Rhys Williams and Nat Phillips to carry the burden. Even Jordan Henderson and Fabinho put in centre-back shifts. With fixtures even more congested this season, Arne Slot will be hoping Van Dijk and Joe Gomez avoid similar issues alongside Konate.
The situation is not identical to previous crises. Leoni’s injury was a freak accident, similar to Van Dijk’s against Everton in 2020, but Slot still has three senior options, giving him slightly more breathing room. He also has emergency solutions he can call on, with Wataru Endo standing out. The Japan captain has played centre-back on numerous occassions in the past, both, with Liverpool and his previous clubs.
Even with these options, managing the back line will require caution. Van Dijk remains a key presence, commanding the defence with authority, while Konate has grown into one of the league’s best centre-backs. Yet Liverpool’s concerns about the Frenchman go beyond the pitch, with contract talks proving problematic and his future still unresolved.
Konate’s deal stands set to expire at the end of the season (Transfermarkt). Speculation links him to Real Madrid, the rats. Reports suggest discussions with the club have been “problematic” as per Liverpool.com who quote The Athletic [subscription required], despite negotiations beginning almost a year ago, and the clock is now ticking. While the player has not formally committed to Madrid, the uncertainty adds pressure to Liverpool’s defensive planning.
Despite these issues, Liverpool remain in a reasonable position. Guehi’s aborted move shows there are alternatives if recruitment becomes necessary, and Leoni’s setback, while frustrating, is temporary. Gomez provides further experience and depth, even if his opportunities have been limited in recent seasons.
Ultimately, Liverpool’s back line is manageable, but the club must navigate both the present campaign and Konate’s contract situation carefully. Ensuring stability at centre-back will be key, and while the talks remain problematic, the squad’s quality gives reason for optimism. Slot’s challenge will be to balance immediate needs with the long-term future, keeping the defence solid until matters are resolved.
