Rio Ngumoha signs new deal at Liverpool

Liverpool FC’s 17-year-old sensational winger Rio Ngumoha has now put pen to paper on a deal, extending his stay on Merseyside until 2028. It’s a significant step for both player and club, as Ngumoha is widely regarded as one of the most exciting young prospects in English football.

The London-born left winger, not very long ago, became a household name after scoring a 90+10’ winner against Newcastle United. Notwithstanding the media attention to that game thanks to the then-ongoing Alexander Isak transfer saga, it worked out well for Ngumoha as his winner grabbed eyeballs from everywhere.

Ngumoha joined the Merserysiders from the Chelsea Youth Setup in September of last year, and was straight away pushed into the first-team setup thanks to his talent and immediate adaptation to new surroundings. Securing his future with the club is good news for the fans, the club, and, of course, the player himself. (Fabrizio Romano via Twitter)

It is not new for starlets to move from one club to another other but in Ngumoha’s case, his leaving Chelsea left their former captain John Terry “gutted”, as he’d like to put it (Daily Mail), which is more than enough proof that the Londoners saw him as a very important player. Terry even drew comparisons of Ngumoha’s playstyle to that of Eden Hazard and Joe Cole.

One for the future!

A total of 95 minutes across all competitions is what he stands at, at the minute. Even though a major chunk of this came very recently, in the 2-1 win over Southampton in the Carabao Cup, Ngumoha has looked brilliant in the few flashes of him we saw against Burnley, Atletico Madrid in the Champions League, and against the Magpies, needless to say.

While it is still early days, the trajectory is promising. Liverpool have moved swiftly to ensure that one of England’s most exciting young players remains tied to the club for the foreseeable future. And if Ngumoha continues on his current path, the next few years could see him emerge as a regular feature at Anfield.

For now, the focus shifts to the match-up against Crystal Palace. Ngumoha would be right to expect a sizeable chunk of minutes in this game, credit to Hugo Ekitike’s sending off against Southampton in the League Cup. Here’s to hoping that the player not only delivers to expectations, but goes well above and beyond that too!
