Manchester United’s defensive options have rarely looked as stretched as they do this season.

Matthijs de Ligt is still working his way back from back surgery, Luke Shaw is injured again and Patrick Dorgu is out for several weeks.

Noussair Mazraoui has a knock from Morocco duty, leaving Harry Maguire and Lisandro Martinez to carry much of the load in the centre.

Maguire’s contract expires next summer, with United holding the option of a further year on both his and Martinez’s deals.

United see one young centre-back in particular as the long-term answer, even if his minutes have been limited so far this season.

PSG eye Leny Yoro move

Leny Yoro is now being monitored by PSG, according to talkSPORT, after the club’s scouts watched him make his France debut in the 4-1 win over Belgium earlier this month.

The back-to-back European champions have identified the 20-year-old as a player of interest, though United see him as a key part of their future.

There is a feeling in France that a big offer could test United’s resolve.

It is a twist given that PSG pulled out of the race for him in 2024 over concerns about his fitness.

United paid an initial £52.2 million in July 2024 to sign him from Lille, a fee that neither PSG nor Real Madrid were willing to match.

He broke a metatarsal in a tangle with Gabriel Jesus in a pre-season friendly against Arsenal in Los Angeles, and had to wait until December for his competitive debut.

Since then he has made 55 appearances for United, with four this season, two of them starts, in the Champions League win over Sabah and the Carabao Cup defeat to Brighton.

His two Premier League appearances this term have both come off the bench, in the wins and draws against Ipswich and Everton.

Leny Yoro came through Lille’s academy and made his Ligue 1 debut at 16 years old, in a 3-1 win over Nice in 2022, earning comparisons to William Saliba.

He was named in Ligue 1’s Team of the Year before leaving for Old Trafford.

Against Belgium he started alongside Maxence Lacroix and won all 4 of his ground duels and all 5 aerial duels against Romelu Lukaku.

Senior figures at United see him and Ayden Heaven as a potential long-term pairing, making any sale hard to imagine.
