PSG are keen to beat Manchester United to the signing of Aston Villa star Emiliano Martinez

The 2024/25 season was no less than a nightmare for Manchester United and their fans. Finishing the season at 15th place in the Premier League was embarrassing for a big club. On top of that, losing the Europa League final, that too against Tottenham, was like rubbing pepper on salt. The wound of being out of European competitions is still fresh. Amidst all this, no miracle happened even after Ruben Amorim took over the bench in the middle of last season. However, now the club’s steps seem a little steadier in preparation for 2025/26. Big names like Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo have joined the club. Along with this, a young player like Diogo Leon has also been secured.

Meanwhile, last season, Andre Onana made some decisive mistakes on many important occasions. He could not give the assurance that is expected from a No.1. Now the club are looking for a new goalkeeper in this transfer window. Fans want a face behind the goalpost that gives confidence, not fear. Also, a strong backup is needed because last time this lack proved to be very costly.

Emiliano or Donnarumma?

According to the report of Football Insider, Aston Villa are ready to sell their goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez for a bid of more than £30 million. PSG have already taken steps in this direction, while Manchester United are trying to bring Gianluigi Donnarumma. Villa need funds, and this is an opportunity for them to strike a big deal. However, for United, this seems to be a battle – two big names at the same time, but only one destination.

Emiliano Martinez is a good option as well. He won the World Cup for Argentina, stood like a wall for Aston Villa many times. However, Donnarumma’s stature is a little different. From AC Milan to PSG, the goalkeeper who helped Italy win Euro 2020, helped PSG win the treble, and he’s only 26. At 6’5”, the Italian’s dominance in the box and superb reflexes make Donnarumma a strong option for the long term.

Who should we go for?

Emiliano Martinez is a good goalkeeper, no doubt about that. However, if Manchester United need a new face in their defence, Donnarumma is the right name. After what Onana did last season, no fan is sure he will make a comeback. It’s time for the club to think long term. Donnarumma’s experience, especially in big matches, is far superior to Martinez’s.

He has consistently performed at a high level at PSG. His saves that won Italy the Euro 2020 final are still memorable. The Italian’s height makes him more powerful in aerial situations, while Emiliano looks a little vulnerable in the box. Donnarumma’s distribution is also more balanced and calm than Martinez’s. Moreover, the age of both players can’t be ignored as well.

United now have to show that they can’t just focus on players. We are not adding for the sake of adding, but laying the foundation for the future. Bringing in Donnarumma would not be just a transfer; it would be a statement. It will be a sign that we are going to be something again. Martinez can be trusted, but Donnarumma is the future. The club must now put all their energy into him.
