PSG Receive Blunt Words Over Pursuing Barcelona, Chelsea Transfer Target

On the latest episode of the “Ensemble PSG Podcast,” PSG expert Jonathan Johnson shared his initial thoughts on why the Ligue 1 side could be considering a move for Mexican and Club Tijuana teenager Gilberto Mora next summer.

“I think part of Luis Campos’ new mission now will be to safeguard PSG’s future,” Johnson said. “That will obviously involve identifying young players coming through the academy who could be integrated into the first team right away. We’ve been seeing a lot of that recently… and I think building out the youth roster in certain positions where there might not be as much talent in the academy right now is certainly logical.”

Moreover, Johnson believes that making a move for Mora could be what PSG need to push into the North American market, considering they can enter the Mexican and U.S. market due to the country’s large Mexican population.  

“When you’re looking at PSG’s overarching ambitions as a club and as an organization, one of the things it really, truly wants to break into around the World Cup — but also after it — is to consolidate its position as North America’s favorite European club,” Johnson added.

“I think when considering that, we can’t just consider the U.S. We’ve also got to consider the likes of Mexico and Canada, especially as it’s a three-country World Cup effort coming up next year. Signing a Mexican player, especially one who is a bright hope for the future, is potentially a smart move.

“I think we’ve seen in the past that senior Mexico internationals have had success up to a certain point. But with PSG, there will always be commercial elements to consider as well. So I think making a move for, arguably, the bright young hope of the Mexican game — potentially bringing them in — really opens up a new audience to PSG, especially when thinking about the way they’ve been trying to gain a foothold in North America over the last couple of years.”
