After Milan made him undergo a medical and then backed away, with Juventus also interested, Marc Pubill has reportedly been snapped up by Atletico Madrid, beating Wolves to his signature.

The right-back had been mentioned as being of interest to several Serie A sides over the summer, including Juventus and Roma, but the strongest focus was certainly from Milan.

Last week, they even went to the unusual lengths of getting the player to undergo preliminary medical tests with their doctors in Barcelona, as the club wanted reassurances on the stability of his knee before making a formal offer to UD Almeria.

After those tests and discussion with coach Max Allegri, Milan backed out of the negotiations and decided to focus on Strasbourg’s Guéla Doué instead.

Serie A sides had given up on Pubill

It had been assumed that Wolverhampton Wanderers therefore had the all-clear to proceed and sign the Spain Under-21 international.

However, this evening transfer pundit Fabrizio Romano and Spanish paper Marca report that Atletico Madrid suddenly swooped in and secured Pubill instead.

The transfer is expected to be worth circa €15m plus bonuses.

Pubill had been all set for a transfer to Atalanta last summer when he failed a medical test.
