Pulisic's Tribute To Diogo Jota Exposes Football's Cruel Side

Liverpool striker Diogo Jota, 28, and his brother André Silva have died in a car crash in Spain. The incident occurred overnight in the region of Zamora. Both were pronounced dead at the scene. Jota had recently married and leaves behind three children.

Initial reports point to a tire blowout during an overtaking attempt. The vehicle lost control, left the road, and burst into flames shortly after impact. No other cars were involved, according to Spanish authorities.

Jota signed with Liverpool in 2020 following an impressive spell at Wolverhampton Wanderers. He quickly became a key figure under Jürgen Klopp, earning praise for his sharp finishing and relentless pressing. Over four seasons, he netted 65 goals in 182 appearances, helping the team lift several major trophies, including the Premier League and the FA Cup.

UEFA observed a moment of silence before Women’s Euro 2025 matches, and tributes have come in from across the football world — including Liverpool FC, UEFA officials, and Portugal’s Prime Minister. A funeral will be held this Saturday in Gondomar, the brothers’ hometown.

On Instagram, USMNT star Christian Pulisic mourned the player's death by reposting a video from digital content creator Raheem Taylor-Parks with "R.I.P." written in the Instagram story. In the video, Raheem stated that many people only appreciate the player when they're gone.

Football fans don't appreciate players until they're gone. A lot of people don’t realize that footballers are just like us — they have thoughts, emotions, fears, and families. I know people are posting Instagram stories and leaving comments to show condolences, but we need to give players their flowers while they can still smell them. Because for players like Diogo Jota, all we’re left with are YouTube clips and memories.

Diogo Jota should have been a key player for Liverpool next season

After dealing with injuries over the last two seasons, Jota lost his place as a regular starter, and his production dipped. Still, with several attacking players likely on their way out, he was expected to step up again — maybe for a few starts, maybe even to reclaim a permanent spot in the lineup.

Luis Díaz’s future with the club remains uncertain. Darwin Núñez and Federico Chiesa have drawn interest from Italian teams, and Trent Alexander-Arnold has already moved to Real Madrid

Jota was always a player who delivered when it mattered. His last goal came in the Merseyside Derby against Everton — Liverpool’s fiercest rival. Now, the club will mourn his loss for seasons to come. Jota will be missed — both on and off the pitch.
