It is fair to say that Tottenham star Lucas Bergvall has already made a name for himself at N17. The Sweden international has quickly become a household name in North London, and the 19-year-old’s talents have made big waves in the Premier League. There is nothing wrong in suggesting that the talented midfielder was one the best players for Ange Postecoglou’s side last season.
Not many would have expected Bergvall to perform like he did in his first full-season with the Lilywhites. The teenage sensation arrived to N17 from Djurgardens IF with lots of high hopes and expectations. And to say that he has delivered on his promise would be an understatement.
The Sweden international’s game has quickly matured, and there was a huge sigh of relief around N17 when Spurs confirmed that Bergvall has extended his contract until 2031. If the Lilywhites want to be successful in the coming years, then they need to build the team around the 19-year-old. And there will also added pressure on Thomas Frank to bring out the best in him.
It was reported earlier that top clubs were willing to pay €60m to Tottenham for Lucas Bergvall’s services. The Lilywhites swiftly snubbed any approaches for the 19-year-old and made the footballing world that the Sweden international is going nowhere in the summer. The aforementioned report did not showcase the names of the club willing to land Bergvall, but it is pretty clear that they were just trying to lay a foundation for any future moves.
However, John Wenham cannot understand why any club would bid for a player that has just signed a new contract extension. Speaking to Tottenham News, Wenham said,
“We’ve heard about clubs willing to offer around £50m for Bergvall. No names were given. However, I found that story quite strange, especially as Bergvall only recently signed a new contract until 2031.”
The Lilywhite Rose owner added,
“Therefore, I don’t know if it was some PR exercise, but I wouldn’t read anything into those rumours. What a signing Bergvall has proved to be, and the future looks very bright for him. In addition, he’ll count as club-trained and homegrown in the years to come, which is great.”
John Wenham suggested that the rumours of clubs bidding £50m for Lucas Bergvall were ‘strange’ as the 19-year-old just a signed a contract extension at N17. The Lilywhite Rose owner insisted that it might be a ‘PR exercise’ and the transfer links should not be taken seriously. Wenham also added that Bergvall’s future is bright and he will also stay in North London for years to come.
Now, Daniel Levy must bring in reinforcements to provide cover for Lucas Bergvall in the heart of the midfield. The talented midfielder is going to be a crucial part of Thomas Frank’s setup at N17, and risking him for all the games would not be a wise move by the Danish tactician. The 19-year-old’s gametime needs to be managed in the right way, and to achieve that, the Lilywhites need to bring in a backup midfielder.
