Race for Europe in Premier League heats up as crucial weekend hits

Newcastle’s next test comes away at Aston Villa this weekend in a match that could have major implications for both teams' European hopes.

Villa, currently seventh with 54 points, is still recovering from its midweek spirited Champions League exit at the hands of Paris Saint-Germain. But domestically, Unai Emery’s side remains firmly in the hunt. 

Villa Park has been a fortress for much of the campaign, and a win over Newcastle would breathe new life into its top-four ambitions. Its pressing intensity and prowess from set-pieces have unsettled top sides all season — qualities it will need to rediscover quickly to keep pace.

Elsewhere, the picture remains equally congested. Nottingham Forest sits just behind Newcastle on 57 points, but back-to-back defeats have raised doubts after it had occupied a top-four spot for much of the season. 

Manchester City and Chelsea, sitting fifth and sixth, respectively, both possess the quality and squad depth to launch a late surge. City, on 55 points, remains a dangerous contender despite an up-and-down campaign, while Chelsea, level with Villa on 54, has shown inconsistency but still poses a threat under first-year head coach Enzo Maresca.

Importantly, the Premier League has secured five Champions League qualification places for the 2025–26 season, thanks to England’s strong UEFA coefficient. The extra spot adds even more significance to the run-in, where the margins between success and failure are increasingly fine.

All eyes turn to Villa Park this weekend, where the stakes are high and the pressure even higher. The race for Europe is heating up, and the drama is far from over.
