Ranking the Premier League kits for the 2023-24 season

If your Premier League favorites can’t play well, they can at least look good. Kits change for Premier League teams basically every year, much like the teams in the Premier League change every year as well. For the 2023-24 season, here is our ranking of the uniforms for all 20 Premier League teams. We’re talking home, away, and alternate options.

1 of 20

20. Fulham

Fulham

Fulham is an unremarkable club having an unremarkable season, and so it is fitting it has an unremarkable look as well. When your club colors are white and black, that doesn’t help. The away kit is a full swath of a “Barbie” pink, which may have been notable a few years ago, but these days it isn’t sufficient.

19. Sheffield United

Sheffield United is going to be relegated. In fact, the Blades have a decent chance of going down as one of the all-time worst Premier League squads. Hey, at least they finished 19th on this list! The home kit, with the classic red-and-white stripes on the shirt spaced well and uncluttered, is better than Fulham’s home kit. However, the away kit is a “classic” look that should have stayed in the past, and the third kit is an absolute zero.

18. Newcastle United

Newcastle is nouveau riche, but not nouveau stylish. Now, the home kit — white-and-black striped shirt with black shorts — kind of needs to remain in place. That doesn’t mean it’s the best look, though. The away and third shirts are of that trendy “busy pattern” look and are fine, and we do like the green socks that go with the green away shirt. All three of these looks are totally solid, but these days that gets you only so far.

17. Tottenham Hotspur

Spurs have, in a walk, the worst home kit in the Premier League. It’s the most-generic white-on-white look imaginable, barely salvaged by the fun crest Spurs have. The away kit is better, but the third kit is the one we like. They call the color “taupe haze,” and the black stripes along the sides of the shirt and shorts say to the world, “We do know you don’t have to go with a monochrome look.” Third kits count for fewer points in our mind, but this one helped Spurs not be last.

16. Chelsea

Chelsea

When the 2023-24 season began Chelsea didn’t have a main jersey sponsor, giving the club the cleanest, least-cluttered look in forever. However, that’s now changed, and in these rankings we barely considered the sponsor element of the look, since that’s more about the practical realities of a billion-dollar business than anything else. The blues for the, um, Blues really seems to pop this year, but the away shirt is a little too, “Have you ever seen the movie ‘Tron’?” for us. As such, they close out the bottom five.

15. Brighton & Hove Albion

Brighton has a great crest, and the blue-and-white stripe look largely works, but the shoulders in all blue read too much like pads and makes everything a smidge less alluring than it would otherwise be. The away kit is effectively the same design, but in green and black, but the black shoulders work better. A pretty good combo!

14. Luton Town

There’s a good chance all three teams promoted this season go right back down, but Luton Town is trying its best to avoid that. Its home look is really sharp, a mostly orange shirt with a white stripe that blends well together. The black shorts and orange socks complement it nicely. However, the away kit is basically just the inverse kit, and that lacks imagination. At this point in the rankings we’re dealing with good kit collections, and slight things can keep a club from a really good look.

13. Everton

Everton is doing the old-school full collar on the home shirts, which we could give or take, but we appreciate the swing. The away kit is the coup, though. The muted orange pops, and the patterned stripes surprisingly work. Even the piping on the shorts is nice. With a solid third kit as well, Everton delivered this year.

12. Liverpool

Liverpool has been great under Jurgen Klopp, and it is in the running to win the Premier League again. The club will just do it with a middle-of-the-pack collection of looks. You know what the home kit looks like. It’s too iconic to change much, and we appreciate the Reds forever wearing all red. The away and third shirts are both bold swings, completely different from the home kit. Everything looks good. Nothing looks great. Thus, here we are.

11. Nottingham Forest

The detail on the shorts of the home kit are the only thing saving it for Forest, but fortunately they have two other looks. While the third kits are busy, they look good, and the away kit is where it’s at. We love the swirling stripes on the shirt, and the light blue shorts and socks finish a wonderful look. Forest’s away kit is probably the best of the bunch thus far.

Nobody in England wears yellow quite like Wolves. The home kit is as strong as ever. We like the mottled look of the away shirt, but the shoulder designs don’t work for us. The third shirt is a nice patterned design in varying shades of blue. A fitting start to the top 10.

9. Manchester United

There’s a chance Man U will finish around ninth in the Premier League, and that’s where they finish here. The shirt is the usual red, though with some subtle bits of mottling and pattern that doesn’t overwhelm. United’s all-white thirds (more cream, perhaps) are solid for their concept, but the away kit is the one that stands out. Also, Man United is probably the biggest beneficiary of not factoring in shirt sponsors too much, because that Team Viewer logo is trash.

8. Brentford

With Brentford, we hit a new level. The top eight all have really good designs. Some of it is the little things, like the Bees wisely blending the black shorts into the red-and-white striped shirts by having some black at the bottom of the shirt. Brentford decided to keep its away kit, but it’s a good look so we have no quibbles, and the third shirts are busy but beautiful.

7. Crystal Palace

The third kit for one of the many, “Oh yeah, it’s a London club” team is a bit busy, but pretty good. On the other hand, the classic home kit for Crystal Palace remains a strong one, a lot of blue with a nice bit of red in the mix. Ultimately, though, the away shirt is our favorite. Palace ended up going with white shorts over aqua blue ones that were bandied about, but the shirt’s lovely stripe of that blue is great. Also, to the extent we count it, putting the team sponsor in purple was a smart touch.

6. Arsenal

Arsenal, perhaps hoping not to pull a, well, Arsenal, tweaked its home kit to be reminiscent of the kits worn by the iconic “The Invincibles” club. It’s nice, and we have no quibbles, but we love the away kit. Inspired by a map of Islington, the shirt is in “shock yellow” with black lines that make an engaging pattern. The touches of light blue? Even better! Hopefully we get to see it again at some point beyond this season.

5. West Ham United

There are two Premier League clubs with home kits that are strikingly similar, and two of our long-time favorites. They are West Ham, and the next team up on these rankings. We love how the claret and light blue work together. The Hammers striped socks? Always a plus. Yeah, these two home kits are excellent, which is why both teams made the top five. However…

4. Aston Villa

Villa is ahead, because West Ham’s away kit is pretty unremarkable. The Birmingham club has good shirts for both its away and third looks, but what really puts it over the top is the fact it decided to opt for light blue shorts for both of these kits. Edge: Aston Villa.

3. Manchester City

Manchester City

City has been one of the gems of English football for years now, and is the favorite to win the title in the 2023-24 campaign. If it does, it will look great doing it. The home kit is business as usual — light blue shirts and socks, white shorts. Why mess with excellence? The away kit has the big collar, but it's maroon, as are the sleeve highlights and the shorts. Even the white is more of a cream color, with patterning to make it pop. The third shirt is basically “neon lightning,” and yet we can’t complain. It looks great. City’s as stylish as almost any club this season.

2. Bournemouth

The Cherries, interestingly, only wear cherry red on their home kits. Bournemouth is wearing the usual red-and-black striped shirts that really pop. The away kit is nice, though the sleeves not being patterned hurt a bit. Fortunately for Bournemouth, the third kit is stellar. Frankly, Borussia Dortmund should steal it. It’s that good.

1. Burnley

Burnley

Burnley may be relegated, but for this one season, it has the best kits in the Premier League. Now, the home kit is also in the vein of West Ham and Aston Villa. It makes the collar work, though, and the light blue sleeves actually work even though they are a different color than the rest of the shirt. What pushes Burnley to the top of this ranking, though, is the fact it has maybe the best away kit of any team. The shirt is mostly lemon yellow, with one bold stripe that is fuzzed out, claret surrounded by black. The shorts are black. The socks are yellow. If Burnley gets relegated, we’ll miss these looks.
