Ranking the top 5 European Golden Boot favorites heading into 2026: Kylian Mbappe lags behind

The European Golden Shoe, the European Golden Boot…whatever you want to call it, this award is one of the most prestigious in world football, and unlike the Ballon d’Or, it is entirely objective.

All it is about is scoring goals. That’s it. That’s the name of the game. You score the most goals, regardless of what happens to your team, you win this award. Kylian Mbappe, for example, won it in his first season at Real Madrid in 2024/25 despite his club not winning any trophie and genuinely being a massive disappointment.

Will Mbappe win it again? Will it come at the cost of Real Madrid winning trophies again? Or will he come up empty handed on all fronts and watch Erling Haaland break more records over him?

Heading into 2026, here are the top five European Golden Boot contenders, ranked, with a surprise thrown in.

5. Stuttgart FW Deniz Undav

And let’s start with a surprise. Deniz Undav went from lower league German cult hero into one of the best goal scorers in the Bundesliga, and yet he is also one of the best creative players in the league, too.

The dude is just a baller. Undav plays the game the way it was meant to be played, and hopefully he keeps up the hipster vibes by never leaving Stuttgart for a club like Manchester United or Juventus or Bayern Munich…or even Dortmund for that matter, given how much they love poaching Stuttgart players.

Mason Greenwood and others have more goals, but Undav is a better all around footballer and has his eight goals in just nine starts. What a player.

4. Inter Milan ST Lautaro Martinez

Lautaro Martinez is lagging way behind the field in the European Golden Boot race, because he only has 8 goals in 14 starts. But everyone who knows ball knows that the Argentinian No. 9 is also very, very streaky, but when he gets on a hot streak and snaps out of this cold one, watch out.

Easily liable to fly up the scoring charts in the second half of the season, Lautaro is a bit held back by how disappointing Inter Milan are without Simone Inzaghi, but I would rather bank on his talent than Ferran Torres, who should be benched for Robert Lewandowski anyway.

3. Real Madrid CF Kylian Mbappe

With 18 goals, Kylian Mbappe is just barely behind Harry Kane and Erling Haaland for third place in the current scoring charts. He is such a wonderful footballer, but there is a lot of dysfunction in Real Madrid – and Mbappe, as he did at PSG, is not proving the narrative that he is someone who gets his own stats but actually makes his team worse.

Mbappe also plays away from goal a lot yet barely gets assists. He is someone who could come crashing in the second half of the season, especially since he has been padding stats against bad teams. Look at his record against the top clubs like Manchester City and Liverpool compared to Kairat and Olympiacos.

2. Bayern Munich ST Harry Kane

Harry Kane is the best all around striker on the planet, and his battle against the young gun Erling Haaland should be a European Golden Boot race for the ages, especially when you throw in Mbappe at Real Madrid as an X-Factor.

With 19 goals, Kane is as good as ever, but his 3 assists do not do justice to the creative role he is playing, and anyone who watched Bayern Munich win Der Klassiker can also attest to the defensive work rate.

1. Manchester City ST Erling Haaland

Meanwhile, Manchester City star striker Erling Haaland can just sit there and focus on the goals, and his attack is about to get even better with Antoine Semenyo likely to join and the insane creative gifts of Rayan Cherki ready to (partially) replace Kevin De Bruyne as Haaland’s main supplier.

Sure, Semenyo might take away from some of Haaland’s goals, but he will provide more assists and less goal stealing than Omar Marmoush did – and Marmoush is the real one who will get phased out by Semenyo coming in.
