Tottenham are set to face competition from RB Leipzig for the signing of Liverpool midfielder Harvey Elliott

Tottenham Hotspur have enquired to Liverpool over the possibility of signing midfielder Harvey Elliott, as Daniel Levy looks to add quality and depth to new boss Thomas Frank’s squad.

Spurs don’t have a natural like-for-like backup to James Maddison in the middle of the park, and the England international’s inconsistency, complemented by his injury problems, saw them suffer in his absence last season. Dejan Kulusevski was transformed into a central midfielder by Ange Postecoglou this past campaign, although the Lilywhites are now targeting a creative midfielder who may go on to compete with Maddison for his position in the first XI.

This is why interest in Harvey Elliott makes sense for Tottenham. The 22-year-old’s Liverpool career stands at a delicate crossroads. Despite him being part of the club since 2019, the midfielder has never really managed to establish himself as a regular starter at Anfield.

Former boss Jurgen Klopp trusted Elliott and gave him game time, unlike current Liverpool manager Arne Slot, who barely used the player in the title-winning 2024/25 campaign. Under Slot, the 22-year-old mustered just 360 minutes of Premier League action after returning from a fractured foot.

As a result, Elliott, who was instrumental in England’s Under-21 Championship success in Slovakia and was crowned Player of the tournament, is expected to move on this summer in search of consistent first-team football. This has seen him attract plenty of interest from all across the continent, with the Reds slapping a £40million price tag on the left-footed midfielder’s head.

But, Tottenham are not expected to get a clean run to sign Elliott from Liverpool. According to a report from The Athletic, RB Leipzig are also interested in signing the England Under-21 international. Jurgen Klopp, who is RB Leipzig’s Head of Global Soccer, knows Elliott very well from his time at Anfield and could push for his signature.

This will come as a massive blow for Tottenham. At 22, Elliott does suit Levy’s transfer policy from recent years, and he fits the profile of a player who can perform well in Thomas Frank’s system at White Hart Lane. The Danish tactician would love a technically gifted schemer operating in advanced areas of the pitch, competing with Maddison and Kulusevski.

As for Leipzig, they have had a poor 2024/25 season and finished seventh in the Bundesliga, meaning they will not play in Europe next term. However, the German club’s record of nurturing young talents and helping them realise their true potential is terrific, which could give them the edge over Liverpool in the race for Elliott’s signature.

So, it will be interesting to see where Elliott ends up having seemingly decided that the time is right to leave Liverpool and become a regular starter elsewhere. Without any second thoughts, Spurs must do everything possible to beat Leipzig to the English midfielder’s signature.
