There are a lot of current Real Madrid fans and even star players like Jude Bellingham who consider themselves Madridistas for life because they grew up watching the elegance of Zinedine Zidane as the centerpiece player of the Galacticos project in the early 2000s.
Zizou then went on to become an even bigger Real Madrid legend as a manager, first learning under Carlo Ancelotti as an assistant and then building on the Decima success with an unprecedented three straight Champions League titles before returning for a second stint to win another La Liga from the grasps of Lionel Messi.
After stepping down from Real Madrid for a second time after burning out during a grueling, COVID-stricken 2020/21 season, Zizou’s biggest dream as a manager then became leading the French national team.
He has finally gotten his wish after turning down clubs like PSG, Manchester United, and Juventus over the years. According to a report from French outlet RMC Sport, via the Madrid Zone, Zinedine Zidane is back in the coaching saddle. He has reached an agreement with the French Federation to become Les Bleus’ next manager after Didier Deschamps and will officially take over after the 2026 World Cup.
It has been a dream of both Real Madrid and French national team fans to see the greatest player in the history of their national team – the hero of the 1998 World Cup triumph – take charge from an increasingly maligned and overly defensive Deschamps.
Real Madrid fans never got to see the current greatest French superstar, Kylian Mbappe, and Zidane join forces in the Spanish capital, but watching them work together for France will be the next best thing.
Patience has finally paid off for the Marseille native and former Bordeaux star, as Zidane’s interest in the French national team job was obvious even going back five years ago.
But France never wavered from Deschamps. Now, they see 2026 as a natural branching point to something new, and after recharging his batteries from covering Real Madrid during a particularly toxic season of the transition to the new era, Zizou, who deserves credit for the Champions League triumph the year after his resignation, is ready to pursue the ultimate glory for his country for a second time in his career.
On a personal note, coaching France is a chance for Zidane to wash away the bitter taste of the 2006 World Cup, in which he was the best player of the tournament but left a lasting mark on his career with Les Bleus for his infamous red card to doom his country in the Final against Italy.
