Antonio Rudiger’s first season in Real Madrid colours wasn’t easy, but he’s certainly come into his own during the 2023-24 campaign. The German international has been one of Los Blancos’ best players, and his ever-presence in the centre of defence has helped Carlo Ancelotti’s side remain on course for a La Liga and Champions League double.

On Thursday, Rudiger collected the Mahou Five Star Player of April award, and upon receiving the accolade, he admitted to being very pleased with his performances over the month, and season with Real Madrid – quotes from MD.

“I’m very happy. It shows that we’ve had a great season and also on a personal level it shows that the fans accept me and value me. That’s important. I feel good and confident in the team. We’ve had a great season and we want to finish on a high.”

Rudiger was asked for his favourite moment from April, and perhaps unsurprisingly, he picked his winning penalty from Real Madrid’s Champions League quarter-final victory over then-reigning champions Manchester City.

“If I could pick one moment in April, it would be the penalty against City, because nobody expected me to take the last one. The coach believed in me and I’m happy to help the team. It’s my job and I’m always looking forward to it.”
