Realistically, could Tottenham get relegated this season?

The idea that Spurs could be called out as realistic candidates for relegation, in January, may appear preposterous, so let’s wade through some of the facts.

Tottenham sits in 14th place with 28 points from 23 matches (after 7 wins, 7 draws, 9 losses), with a goal difference of +2 (33 goals scored, 31 conceded). They are level on points with 15th-placed Crystal Palace (also 28 points from 23 games). The relegation zone (bottom three) features much weaker records, which is positive.

For context, the table around the bottom shows teams like Wolverhampton Wanderers in 20th with only 8 points from 24 games, indicating a significant gap to the drop zone.

The gap to the relegation places appears to be around 8-10+ points (or more, given the bottom teams’ low tallies), and they have a game in hand on some teams around them.

Recent form has been poor, and Tottenham are winless in several recent league games (including a 2-2 draw at second-bottom Burnley, and we’ve faced criticism for inconsistency under their current management.

A tough February schedule (including matches against Manchester City, possibly others like Newcastle, Arsenal, etc.) could increase pressure if results don’t improve.

However, statistical models (e.g., OPTA cited in reports) give Tottenham only about a 1.5% chance of relegation, describing it as highly unlikely despite the “R-word” being mentioned in some media and fan circles due to their slide from expected top-half contention.

Last season, we finished low (around 17th) but avoided real danger, partly due to focus on other competitions.

In summary: Tottenham is in mid-table mediocrity with a poor run, but the points buffer and quality of the squad mean they’re far from being sucked into a serious survival scrap right now. A few wins could quickly push them back toward mid-table safety or even European contention.

Our view

Whilst the form guide doesn’t suggest a long-term malaise, such as at Wolves, it is massively worrying that we are only able to top draw against their bedfellows, Burnley.

In short, the team is utterly unreliable, and whilst progress in Europe is enjoyable, it is unlikely to pan out as the Europa League campaign did, simply because this competition is the global elite.

By all means, tell fellow fans that relegation is a ridiculous suggestion, but we advise not putting money on it.
