Manchester United’s steady climb under Ruben Amorim has become one of the most compelling storylines of the Premier League season.

The Portuguese tactician has managed to restore discipline, tactical structure and optimism at Old Trafford after years of uncertainty.

United’s recent resurgence has fans daring to believe again, with Amorim’s methods producing both results and renewed team spirit.

His emphasis on intensity, positional awareness and youth development has injected new life into a squad that once looked fractured.

But a new revelation has surfaced that adds another fascinating twist to Amorim’s story, and it involves Liverpool.

According to a new book titled Walk On: Inside Arne Slot’s Liverpool by journalist James Pearce, Liverpool were actually interested in appointing Ruben Amorim before his eventual move to Manchester United.

The Reds viewed him as a potential successor to JUrgen Klopp before settling on Arne Slot from Feyenoord.

Following Klopp’s announcement in January 2024 that he would step down in the summer, Liverpool’s hierarchy began searching for his replacement.

Candidates such as Xabi Alonso were initially shortlisted, but after the now Real Madrid manager declined the opportunity, alternative prospects began to emerge.

Pearce writes: “After Alonso publicly ruled himself out of contention, the name most persistently linked with Liverpool in the media was Sporting Lisbon coach Amorim, who was about to clinch his second Primeira Liga title with the Portuguese giants.”

However, while the Reds were impressed by Amorim’s accomplishments in Portugal, doubts soon surfaced over whether his tactical approach would suit Liverpool’s high-tempo identity.

Pearce continued: “Amorim was a serious contender and boasted the best record in terms of player availability.

“However, that was partly attributed to him working in a less intense league.

“There was plenty to admire but Edwards and Hughes had doubts whether his preference for a three-man defence would suit the squad he would be inheriting at Anfield.

“There were also concerns that his slower, less dynamic style of play might fail to energise supporters.

“Hughes held talks with Amorim in Lisbon but the Sporting boss was subsequently informed that Liverpool were going in a different direction.”

Liverpool eventually appointed Arne Slot, who had led Feyenoord to the Eredivisie title and the UEFA Conference League final in 2021/22.

Pearce added: “Slot was always the preferred candidate.”

Liverpool may have chosen their man, but it’s Ruben Amorim who now looks destined to lead United’s next great era.
