Manchester United’s pursuit of Ederson looks to be over.

The club had reached an agreement with Atalanta surrounding the possibility of a deal in late May and the midfielder was set to sign his contract but that now appears unlikely.

The 27-year-old has not played in England during the entirety of his career and, whilst the possibility of him playing in the Premier League remains open through Newcastle United, he will not be playing in the colours of Manchester United in the upcoming season.

Some supporters have been left bamboozled whilst others have purely moved on and began to look at other targets that the club are targeting.

Now, the reason that the Red Devils rejected Ederson has been revealed helping to provide more clarity.

According to Calcio Mercato, Manchester United rejected the midfielder due to him been deemed not fit for action.

The outlet have also stated that the club had a problem with his right knee.

Atalanta were left surprised by this reasoning, according to the Italian outlet, whilst rumours are spreading that the real reason that the club rejected Ederson was due to a switch in transfer target.

Andrey Santos is due to sign for the club in the coming days from Chelsea, having already completed his medical with the Red Devils.

The midfielder, who moved to England last summer, made 47 appearances for Chelsea across the previous campaign, scoring three goals and providing five assists.

Both Santos and Ederson play in similar roles, leading to the emergence of speculation about changing transfer targets.

Whether the club rejected the Atalanta midfielder due to switching targets remains to be seen although United’s displeasure with his fitness is likely to have been a direct factor in the club’s rejection.

Following rejection, Ederson will join back up with Atalanta’s squad as the club prepare for next season.
