Tottenham have backed off from making a move for Crystal Palace star Eberechi Eze

Tottenham Hotspur fans’ hopes of seeing their club make a high-profile signing this summer has been dealt a setback.

Before the opening of the summer transfer window, reports suggested that Daniel Levy was keen to make a ‘marquee signing’ after the club’s Europa League success and subsequent qualification to the Champions League. Bryan Mbeumo emerged as a target after Thomas Frank’s appointment, but soon it became clear that he would prefer a move to Manchester United if he departs Brentford this summer. This led to Spurs shifting their focus to Crystal Palace star Eberechi Eze.

Eberechi Eze, who was electric in the final one and a half months for Crystal Palace and played a chief role in their FA Cup success, has a £68m release clause in his contract that needs to be triggered by his suitors to land his services. It is also believed that the 26-year-old is open to joining Tottenham in the coming weeks.

However, Spurs suffered the first blow in their pursuit of the England international earlier this week when reports suggested that bitter rivals Arsenal have joined them in the mix for his signature. If the Gunners holding talks with Eze’s entourage is bad news for Tottenham, the latest development delivered by a reliable journalist should leave the fans distraught.

According to Ben Jacobs, Spurs have cooled their interest in the Palace playmaker. While their interest in Eze is genuine, they have backed out from a potential move of late.

“My understanding is that Tottenham have actually backed off in the last few hours, and although the interest is genuine, it is nothing more than that,” Ben Jacobs told talkSPORT.

This update from Jacobs should come as a massive setback for the Tottenham fans, who have been begging Daniel Levy and Co. to wrap up the Eze deal as quickly as possible. Arsenal entering the mix was always viewed as a big threat, and after them being on the verge of signing one of Spurs’ summer targets in Brentford midfielder Christian Norgaard, they want to deliver another seismic blow to the Lilywhites by luring Eze to the Emirates Stadium.

We do not have an idea whether the 26-year-old’s wage demands are too high for Spurs to consider or does Arsenal feel optimistic about landing him after holding talks with his representatives. However, what the fans now know via Jacobs is that the club have backed off from making a move for the Eagles ace and that is certainly not going to go down well in the white side of North London.
