Iconic football commentator labels Tottenham Hotspur youngster Archie Gray a big talent

Tottenham Hotspur beat Leeds United 2-1 at Elland Road last weekend to enter the international break on a high.

Spurs legend Graham Roberts praised Mohammed Kudus and Xavi Simons for their sizzling performances against Leeds United. Kudus, in particular, was excellent, scoring his first goal in a Tottenham shirt albeit a strong deflection off Pascal Struijk. The Ghanaian international repeated his career-best statistic in a match-winning performance against Daniel Farke’s men.

The game also marked the return of Archie Gray at Elland Road- 15 months after swapping the Whites for Spurs in a £40 million deal. Once Leeds United’s golden boy, the teenage prodigy become one of the north London club’s most versatile assets last season amid an injury crisis, playing 45 games across defence and midfield.

Ex-Tottenham forward calls Archie Gray a “big talent”

It was not surprising that much of the focus before the game on Saturday was largely centred around Archie Gray. Speaking on Tottenham’s YouTube channel before the game, iconic football commentator Clive Allen was discussing the youngster’s potential. The ex-Tottenham forward gave the youngster a shining review, calling him a “big talent”.

“I think this will be an emotional day for him,” Clive Allen said.

“He was very good at Leeds in the early days of his career before his move to us. He’s a player that when called upon he’s very reliable and he’s a really big talent.”

Gray likened to Rodri and Declan Rice

Gray was an unused substitute in Tottenham’s gritty 2-1 win over Leeds at the weekend, with Thomas Frank and Co. getting back to winning ways after back-to-back frustrating draws with Brighton and Wolves in the Premier League.

Since starting Tottenham’s 3-0 win over Burnley at home on the opening weekend, the Durham-born talent has mustered just a minute of Premier League action. And not getting on the pitch to face his former club would have been frustrating for the England youth international. Nonetheless, Gray is expected to get plenty of opportunities this season, with Frank likening him to two of the Premier League’s best midfielders in Rodri and Declan Rice.

Having tried to sign him during his time at Brentford, only to lose out at the final hurdle, Frank now has got a great opportunity to nurture his Gray’s talent and help him fulfil his vast potential in north London. The Dane has a player in his hands who can become one of the best in midfield if groomed properly.
