Great soccer matches were played in the 1090s at both club and international levels. Admittedly, few games of the decade will have gained classic status, as neither World Cup finals really generated much excitement, and most of the Champions League finals did not feature that many goals either. However, there were still some notable matches played in the 1990s.

England Vs Germany: 1990 World Cup

This England game against Germany was one of the best matches of a World Cup that generated little excitement. England were having their best World Cup since ’66, and then, like 1966, Germany stood in their way of potential World Cup glory in this semi-final. Germany took the lead via a free-kick, although England were able to level later in the game. In extra-time both teams had their chances and hit the post. However, the game went to penalties, and it was Germany who progressed to the World Cup final.

Milan Vs Barcelona: 1994 European Cup Final

This game featured two great teams, Barcelona and Milan. Barcelona had some fine players, and so some may have expected to win, but Milan dominated the game. Overall, they ran out 4-0 winners in one of the most convincing wins in a Champions League final. Romario and co could not get in the game, and Milan went on to win the Champions League. The match was most memorable for the shocking defeat of the so-called Barcelona dream team.

England Vs Holland: 1996 European Championship

Perhaps the best display from an England team in the decade, this group game between England and Holland is a classic Three Lions match. This was obviously a match to forget for the Netherlands. However, it was one of the most memorable England games ever played at the Twin Towers.

England and Holland both went into this game level on points in the group, but it was England that would go two in front in the first half with goals. In the second half, England did not ease off and extended their lead with a fine strike from Shearer, and then ended the rout with a fourth goal. A late goal from Holland was some consolation for them, but it was the St George’s flag that dominated Wembley after the 4-1 victory. England had topped the group and went through to the quarter-finals.

Dynamo Kiev Vs Bayern Munich: 1999 Champions League Semi-Final

This Champions League semi-final between Bayern and Dynamo had plenty of goals and late drama. Shevchenko and Kaladze had given Dynamo a two-goal lead before Bayern’s Tarnat pulled one back with a long-range free-kick. However, in the second half, Dynamo further extended their lead to 3-1. With Bayern seemingly heading out, Effenberg struck to pull another goal back and leave the score at 3-2. In the closing stages, Bayern would then score an equaliser to make it 3-3 overall, which was enough for them to reach the final.

Argentina Vs Romania: 1994 World Cup

One of the best games of the 94 World Cup featured Argentina and Romania in the second round. Romania had shown good form in the World Cup going into the match, and would not let up against Argentina, scoring fairly early in the game. Argentina were able to level the match before Hagi inspired Romania to victory, scoring the third of Romania’s three goals. Although Argentina was able to pull a goal back, the game would end 3-2 to Romania. Romania reached the quarter-finals for the first time.

End Of My Best Soccer Matches Of The 1990s Rant

Those were five of the greatest games played in the 1990s. Thrilling matches in the Champions League, World Cup, and Euro Championship that had some fine soccer and plenty of goals. Few other games played during that decade matched them for drama, excitement, and spectacle.
