LewanThe focus of the soccer world is on the 2026 FIFA World Cup as it enters the knockout stage of the tournament. But on Sunday, the Chicago Fire made headlines with a big move for the rest of their season.
After a few weeks of reports and rumors surrounding the visit of Polish striker Robert Lewandowski, it sounds like it’s becoming official.
Multiple reports state that the Fire have agreed to a deal with the striker, adding a key piece to their roster. The reported deal is for two years and will begin right away.
There were reports for months that the Fire were interested in a move to land Lewandowski. He took a visit to Chicago a few weeks back and now, it’s becoming a reality.
The Athletic was able to confirm earlier reports on Sunday that Lewandowski and the Fire had a deal:
Poland international striker Robert Lewandowski has agreed to a deal with the Chicago Fire and will join the club this summer, sources briefed on the situation tell The Athletic.
Lewandowski will sign a two-year contract and will be one of MLS’s highest-paid players, sources add. TalkSport and Sky Sports first reported Lewandowski’s decision.
The 37-year-old striker joins a Fire team that is right in the thick of the MLS Playoff race. He will instantly become one of the marquee stars in MLS and has the chance to help lead the Fire to a title.
In his career, Lewandowski has played for Borussia Dortmund, Bayern Munich and Barcelona. He won 10 Bundesliga titles between his time with Dortmund and Bayern. Lewandowski followed that up with three La Liga titles. He also helped Bayern capture the 2020 Champions League title.
With the addition of Lewandowski, the Fire could look to play two strikers now. They have Hugo Cuypers who is off to a hot start this season, leading MLS in goals scored. Manager Gregg Berhalter will likely look to implement a two-striker lineup, trying to get the most of his duo.
For Lewandowski, the fit is perfect. He joins a team already in contention and the city of Chicago has a large Polish presence.More must-reads:
