Francesco Acerbi could leave Inter Milan this summer despite having a year remaining on his contract with the club.

This according to today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInter1908.

Francesco Acerbi is currently under contract with Inter until the end of June 2026.

However, as part of the deal, the Italian international will see his wages drop significantly.

Meanwhile, there are doubts about how much of a role that the former Lazio and Sassuolo defender will continue to have in the team,

Acerbi had been a stalwart under Simone Inzaghi. He started regularly for the Nerazzurri, including in the Champions League final against Paris Saint-Germain.

However, with the arrival of Cristian Chivu as new Inter coach, there are doubts over whether Acerbi will retain such a prominent role.

Moreover, Acerbi turns 38 next season. Therefore, his age could certainly begin to catch up with him even more.

In the meantime, the Gazzetta report, Inter are targeting a defender at the complete other end of the age spectrum.

Giovanni Leoni could follow Cristian Chivu to the Nerazzurri from Parma.

Therefore, that could be another factor that pushes Acerbi out of the club.
