USMNT leading goalscorer Folarin Balogun is already primed to miss the USMNT's next World Cup game against Belgium. But despite fans demanding that FIFA rescind the controversial red card and suspension he was handed on Wednesday, it appears that FIFA might actually give him more punishment, not less.
According to ESPN's Mark Ogden, there is no appeal available for Balogun to mitigate the suspension. Worse still, FIFA's disciplinary panel will soon review the play and could decide to extend the ban to multiple games.
"And Balogun could yet face an extended suspension if FIFA's disciplinary panel regarded his challenge on Bosnia's Tarik Muharemovic as warranting more than the automatic one-match ban issued with World Cup red cards," Ogden wrote.

Ogden pointed to the multi-game suspension that Qatar's Assim Madibo received after his red card play that resulted in a broken leg for Canada's Ismael Kone in the group stage as a precedent that could be used. However, he did not that there has not yet been a decision on whether the length of the suspension will be formally reviews.
"Qatar midfielder Assim Madibo had his one-match ban for a red card extended to five games by FIFA after Canada's Ismaël Koné suffered a broken leg in a challenge during the Group B tie earlier in the tournament, but sources have said no decision has yet been made as to whether to review the length of Balogun's suspension."
Soccer fans on social media were a little skeptical of Ogden's framing of the issue though. Many pointed out that it would be incredibly unlikely that FIFA extends the ban since it didn't result in a catastrophic injury to Bosnia's Tarik Muharemovic. Some accused Ogden of simply rage-baiting without evidence, while others started raging against FIFA's policies:
"Yeah, no. Technically, any ejection is reviewed and evaluated for more punishment after the fact in all professional leagues - so, this isn't really news. The idea this suspension could be extended is ridiculous and pure delusion," one user on X said dismissively.
"FIFA is stupid, they can extend a suspension but not reduce it," another wrote.
"You're stirring the pot here a bit Mark. He's not getting an extended ban," wrote a third.
"And Messi for same tackle gets nothing."
Maybe Ogden is just making a mountain out of a molehill (or in this case, a bigger mountain from a smaller mountain), but one thing seems to be consistently clear: Balogun will not be getting his suspension reduced, no matter what.
