A man was detained after a car collided with pedestrians in Liverpool city centre during Liverpool FC’s Premier League victory parade, according to ESPN. Several police cars and ambulances responded to incident, which took place on Water Street.
Merseyside Police released a statement after the reported incident. An air ambulance also arrived at the scene, per ESPN.
“We are currently dealing with reports of a road traffic collision in Liverpool city centre,” the statement read. “We were contacted at just after 6pm [BST] today, Monday 26 May, following reports a car had been in a collision with a number of pedestrians on Water Street. The car stopped at the scene and a male has been detained. Emergency services are currently on the scene.”
A North West Ambulance spokesperson also released a statement after the incident at the parade. Liverpool FC ended its title winning season with a draw vs. Crystal Palace, 1-1.
“NWAS is supporting an incident in Liverpool city centre, following reports of a road traffic collision,” the additional statement read. “We are currently assessing the situation and working with other members of the emergency services. Our priority is to ensure people receive the medical help they need as quickly as possible.”
Hundreds of thousands of supporters lined the streets to support Liverpool FC’s title. It was the 20th league title, tying Manchester United’s record for most titles in the Premier League.
Mohamed Salah scored the tying goal against Crystal Palace in the 84th minute. That came after a Ryan Gravenberch red card in the 68th minute.
“Last time it was in the pandemic, which wasn’t a great feeling but still a Premier League,” Salah told Sky Sports. “To win the second one with the fans at Anfield, first the Spurs game and now today, you can see how much it means.”
