Inter Milan could face the likes of Manchester City and Bayern Munich in the FIFA Club World Cup knockout rounds.

Today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews, detail the potential opposition for the Nerazzurri in the round of sixteen of the tournament next summer and beyond.

Yesterday, Inter learned the three teams they’ll face in the group stage of next summer’s Club World Cup.

The Nerazzurri drew the likes of Argentine giants River Plate, Mexican side Monterrey, and Urawa Red Diamonds from Japan in Group E.

That is hardly a group that Inter will underestimate. But at the same time, the Nerazzurri will feel that they can get out of the group. And be the favourites to top it.

Man City & Bayern On Possible Inter Club World Cup Path

If Inter are to top their group, they’ll face the runner-up from Group F. That group contains the likes of Borussia Dortmund and Fluminense.

The Nerazzurri could view Brazilian club Fluminense as manageable opposition in the round of sixteen.

Then, on paper, the likeliest quarterfinal opposition for Inter would be Premier League giants Manchester City.

And in the semifinals, meanwhile, Bayern Munich would look to be the strongest team that could possibly come face to face with Inter.

'Done deal' – Attacking midfielder move is second confirmed Chelsea move of the evening

We just reported on Fabrizio Romano’s “here we go” on the Jorrel Hato to Chelsea deal, but that may not be the only transfer which is confirmed this evening. Nicolo Schira’s “Done Deal” doesn’t have quite the cultural cachet as Romano’s “here we go,” but he still likes to drop it in when he gets a scoop, and it seems he has one tonight. It’s a loan, and one we’ve expected for a while, so it’s not the juiciest news. But still, in a week where there’s a lot to get done, it’s another bullet point we can consider dealt with. Paez finally gets Ligue 1 deal done Paez’s move to Strasbourg has been talked about for some time, and it means we now complete our quota there – Mike Penders in goal, Mamadou Sarr in defence, Paez in attack. It’s probably not going to be an easy season for the Alsatians after losing so many key players in the summer – we hope these reinforcements are enough to keep them competitive. For Paez it’s a huge step up from South America, and it’s very hard to tell how he will adjust. The one curious question about Paez move What is rather curious to us is why this took so long to complete. It’s been clear since about January that Paez would be joining Strasbourg. He even trained with them back in the spring. Given the two clubs have the same owners, and it’s a loan deal – what on Earth was there to worry about all this time? What negotiations are there to have? It’s just money from one pocket into another, and even by Strasbourg’s more modest standards, Paez’s wages aren’t significant. Perhaps it was just a question of both teams sorting out the big picture of their loan plans. In any case, it’s done now and finally the Ecuador star can start working on his big move to European football.

'Very Dangerous:' Yankees’ Trade Addition Makes Feelings Clear After Rays Game

The New York Yankees haven't gotten superstars as Thursday's Trade Deadline approaches, but they did add depth that could change the course of their season. They acquired third baseman Ryan McMahon and Amed Rosario over the past week, the former of whom has already made his presence felt. McMahon recorded hits in his first three games with the team before going 0-for-4 against the Tampa Bay Rays on Tuesday. However, the 30-year-old went 2-for-4 with an RBI against them on Wednesday, including a walkoff single to center in the 11th inning. McMahon opened up about his experience with the team so far postgame, via SNY. "It just feels good to come through for the team," he said. "Everyone matters in this chase, so just happy to come through." "It's a lot of fun being here and being in this clubhouse," he continued. "It's a very dangerous team. I've seen it from afar, playing against them..." New York was down 1-0 from the third inning until the eighth, when Trent Grisham hit a solo homer to right. Giancarlo Stanton followed up with an RBI single, giving the team a 2-1 lead. Closer Devin Williams then blew the save in the ninth inning after allowing two runs, but Anthony Volpe tied the contest in the bottom frame with a solo homer to left. After that, Tampa Bay's Jonathan Aranda hit a sacrifice fly in the top of the 10th before Cody Bellinger hit an RBI triple to center in the bottom frame. New York reliever Tim Hill then threw a scoreless inning in the 11th, and McMahon followed up with his walkoff single. The Yankees have now won three of their last four games.

Colts GM expresses regret on Anthony Richardson decision

The Indianapolis Colts wish they had made a different decision in 2023. The Colts selected Richardson with the No. 4 pick in the 2023 draft after the dual-threat quarterback had an incredible third season at Florida. He threw for 2,549 yards and 17 touchdowns and added 654 yards and nine touchdowns on the ground in his first season as a full-time starter. Given the momentum Richardson had at Florida in 2022 and with Indianapolis during OTAs, then-first-year head coach Shane Steichen named the former Gators quarterback the Colts' starter in the middle of preseason. Per Zak Keefer of The Athletic, Indianapolis general manager Chris Ballard has "regret" in not waiting to start Richardson until he was better adjusted to the league. "The regret is real, from both player and team," Keefer wrote. "Ballard wishes he’d resisted the urge to hand Richardson the job right away, a move late owner Jim Irsay pushed for at the time. What the young quarterback needed was the chance to acclimate to the NFL, to learn the job, to watch a veteran’s daily habits and build his own." “He just doesn’t know yet,” Ballard told The Athletic. “He didn’t have enough experience, both from a play standpoint but also a professional standpoint of how to get ready.” But, Ballard concedes, “when you take one high, there’s an expectation. The pressure to play the kid is real.” Richardson suffered a couple of injuries in his rookie season before his campaign ended in October when he had to have shoulder surgery. He also dealt with injuries and a brief benching in favor of veteran quarterback Joe Flacco in 2024. In his 15 games played in two seasons, Richardson has thrown for 2,391 yards, 11 touchdowns and 13 interceptions while adding 635 rushing yards and 10 rushing touchdowns. Before training camp this summer, the team declared Richardson and former New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones would compete for the starting job for 2025. Despite Richardson's status as a starter being unknown this year, Ballard isn't considering releasing or trading the 23-year-old quarterback. He thinks Richardson can be a starter by 2026. The tricky part now for the Colts is that they must unlock Richardson's talent while also encouraging the young quarterback. Frankly, it won't be good for his confidence if he gets beaten out by Jones in training camp. As the No. 4 pick in the draft, 2023 should have been the year for a real quarterback competition. Instead, a difficult situation has been created for the Colts and Richardson, and it serves as a lesson for overeager general managers and coaches.

Giants potentially fleece Mets in trade for rental reliever

The San Francisco Giants were reportedly willing to listen to offers for their relief pitching. The first domino fell on Wednesday afternoon. Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reported that the Giants traded reliever Tyler Rogers to the Mets. In exchange, Joel Sherman of the New York Post reported that the Mets sent pitchers Jose Butto and Blade Tidwell, along with outfield prospect Drew Gilbert, to San Francisco. Rogers has been a durable reliever throughout his career, leading the league in appearances three times. He has pitched in a major league-high 53 games this season, posting a 1.80 ERA and a 0.860 WHiP over 50 innings, striking out 38 batters with four walks. Rogers will instantly slot into the late-inning mix, strengthening the Mets' bridge to closer Edwin Diaz. New York paid a steep price for two to three months of Rogers. Tidwell, the Mets' 10th-best prospect per MLB.com, has a five pitch mix highlighted by a plus slider and a fastball that has been clocked as high as 98 mph. He has struggled in his brief time in the majors this season, posting a 9.00 ERA and a 2.200 WHiP over 15 innings, striking out 10 batters with 10 walks. However, Tidwell had a strong showing in Triple-A, posting a respectable 4.10 ERA and a 1.291 WHiP over 79 innings in Syracuse, striking out 87 batters with 32 walks. Gilbert, the Mets' 12th ranked prospect, has battled injuries throughout his career. A consensus top 100 prospect ahead of the 2024 season, Gilbert's stock has fallen as his production cratered last season as injuries piled up. He is still regarded as having a strong command of the strike zone with solid contact and speed skills, but is a question mark due to his struggles to stay healthy. Butto has the most major league experience of any of the trio heading to San Francisco. After shuttling between the rotation and bullpen in 2024, he had settled in as a solid middle reliever for the Mets. This season, Butto has posted a 3.64 ERA and a 1.383 WHiP in 47 innings, striking out 41 batters with 22 walks. Butto and Tidwell should fare well with the Giants as Oracle Park is an extreme pitcher's park. Gilbert now has a path to the majors as outfielder Juan Soto had blocked his ascension in the Mets system. This trade may be one where the Giants receive several key pieces for a future contending team.
