Inter Milan could clinch the Serie A title in the derby against AC Milan with the right sequence of results.

Today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews, note that the derby could be decisive for Inter.

At the moment, Inter are a whopping fourteen points clear at the top of the Serie A table.

With nine matches left and 27 points to play for, there is a sense that it’s a matter of “when” rather than “if” the Nerazzurri make mathematically certain of finishing as champions.

But there is one match in particular that Inter will have their eyes on.

The Nerazzurri have played down the idea of winning the title in front of the Milan fans in the derby next month.

But the Gazzetta contend that behind these denials, it’s undoubtedly something that the team would relish.

What Inter Need To Clinch Serie A Title Vs AC Milan

Mathematically speaking, if Inter collect fourteen points from the last nine matches of the season, there is no way that they can be caught at the top of the table.

And the Nerazzurri’s next three matches are, on paper, quite winnable.

Of course, there are no straightforward matches in Serie A. But Empoli at home, Udinese away, and Cagliari at home is about as kind of a run of fixtures as could be hoped for.

All three of those teams are in the relegation scrap.

This means that there will be no shortage of motivation from any of them to get a shock against Inter. But also, perhaps, a certain lack of quality and form.

Meanwhile, Milan’s next three matches are against Fiorentina, Lecce, and Sassuolo.

In the event that both city rivals are to win all three of their next matches, then the derby could be decisive for the title.

If Inter were to beat the Rossoneri to go seventeen points clear at the top, there would only be five matches left to go.

That would mean that Milan could not, even purely on paper, catch up with fifteen points left on offer.

On the other hand, a draw in those circumstances would leave the Rossoneri with a nominal chance of winning the title.

And perhaps the satisfaction of at least delaying their city rivals’ celebrations by one further week, and denying them the chance to clinch the title at the San Siro.

On the other hand, if Inter were to win their next three matches, and Milan were to drop any points from their next three, then even a draw in the derby would mean Inter would be mathematically certain of winning the title.
