There have been articles written elsewhere today claiming there is transfer interest in Celtic’s Cameron Carter-Vickers, but it is not a subject we have touched on in The Celtic Star, and with good reason…
The root of these stories appears to go back to a 67 Hail Hail article in which former Manchester United scout Graeme Bailey indicated he knew of interest from three or four clubs down south in our USA international, it seems to have then been picked up by the mainstream media.
And after Carter-Vickers was namedropped in Stephen McGowan’s article in The Herald this morning, regarding Celtic’s interest in Japanese defender Hayato Inamura, the story appeared in more online publications.
I’m sure Graeme Bailey has his sources and as such may have good reason to comment on Cameron Carter-Vickers transfer rumours, but other than this chap outlining his opinion on a possible transfer, there didn’t appear to be any credible links to CCV moving on from Celtic.
Indeed readers of the Kerrydale Street Forum transfer rumours thread may have noticed that Graeme Bailey was mentioned yesterday. One of the site’s admins, moravcik67 – who you might know for his excellent European analysis on social media – gave this warning to Celtic supporters on Kerrydale:
“When sticking up a story from online, please make sure it comes from something approaching a real source. I’m not sure that “67 Hail Hail and our transfer correspondent Graeme Bailey” falls into that category.
“I’m going to start deleting anything that originates with Graeme Bailey. Seems nothing but clickbait nonsense. He’s had half our team sold in the last year.”
Instead, it would be rather foolish for Celtic not to ensure Carter-Vickers remained at the club. Amongst a multitude of central defenders sourced by the club over the last few transfer windows CCV remains the only one Brendan Rodgers seems to trust 100%.
In fact, as we mentioned earlier today in our article regarding Celtic’s previous interest in Red Star defender Veljko Milosavljevic if anything Celtic need to supplement the squad with a suitable rotation option for Carter-Vickers, as when he is absent through injury, and it is a relatively common occurrence, we do lack for suitable cover.
Now it appears Celtic may also be somewhat confused as to where these links to CCV are materialising from, with Daily Record reporting the Hoops hierarchy are a tad ‘bemused’ by the build-up of these rumours:
‘Celtic remain relaxed and confident of keeping hold of Cameron Carter-Vickers despite mounting speculation the San Francisco 49ers hope to lure him to Leeds United. Record Sport understands there has been no contact made with the Parkhead club and that manager Brendan Rodgers is unaware of any moves to deprive him of his star centre half before the start of the coming campaign.
‘The Celtic board are also believed to be somewhat bemused by reports of an imminent bidding war for Carter-Vickers who has provided a rock like presence at the heart of a championship winning defence since moving north from London four years ago.’
As with any player at Celtic, Cameron Carter-Vickers would no doubt have a value, which if triggered, may make Celtic take notice. It is certainly reassuring then to read of a counter to the sudden rise in ‘CCV is offski’ rumours over the last four days.
It seems if there is interest in Cameron Carter-Vickers, so far at least, no-one has picked up the phone to Celtic to make their interest official.
