Rio Ferdinand hints at new Premier League medal

Former Manchester United star Rio Ferdinand won a whopping six Premier League titles across a twelve-year stint at Old Trafford.

With current uncertainty, Ferdinand’s tally of six could grow.

The Premier League has been plunged into chaos after Manchester City were finally found guilty of breaching the league’s financial regulations over nine years.

Three and a half years after 115 charges were cast upon United’s rivals in February 2023, the Cityzens are now facing serious consequences, guilty of 114 of these.

One potential repercussion of all their rule-breaking could be having their titles stripped, won between 2009 and 2018. This involves two times when Manchester United finished in second place in the Premier League.

It could mean the Red Devils are handed the 2011/12 and 2017/18 Premier League titles retrospectively.

Rio Ferdinand has had plenty to say on the matter, and was part of Manchester United’s runner-up side in 2011/12, when Sergio Aguero stole the title from their hands in the last minute against QPR on the final day.

On his X account, Ferdinand has posted a range of tweets hinting at how he feels he should be awarded a seventh Premier League medal, after the revelations that Manchester City cheated along the way to four titles.

It’s a look at what could be to come, with City under severe scrutiny, despite being expected to appeal the league’s ruling.

As it stands, Manchester United hold a record thirteen Premier League titles. If the Red Devils are in luck, they could be set to reach a count of fifteen, and make Ole Gunnar Solskjaer a retrospective title-winner.

Even if awarded the titles, the wins just won’t be the same. The Premier League need to do more to stop rule-breaking in football – City’s cheating cannot be a feat repeated ever again.
