Manchester United may still be enjoying the boost from their win over Sunderland, which gave Ruben Amorim a bit more breathing room, but a far bigger challenge is just around the corner.
It’s often said that you can only beat what’s in front of you – usually when people are trying to defend getting too excited about a result that was always expected.
The mood around United definitely improved after that 2-0 win at Sunderland. It’s not going to change the season on its own, but it does help calm things down after a tough run.
United had one of the hardest starts in this season’s Premier League schedule, facing Arsenal, Manchester City and Chelsea within their first five matches.
But even with that tough opening, Ruben Amorim’s side have managed to pick up 10 points from seven matches. It’s not ideal, but it’s not exactly a disaster either – especially if they can start building some momentum now.
Looking ahead to Manchester United vs Liverpool this weekend, Rio Ferdinand is confident that there are two United players who will cause issues for Jurgen Klopp.
He told TNT Sports: “I think Rashford and Hojlund could be problems for them [Liverpool] as well.”
According to Opta Analyst’s expected Premier League table, United are fourth in points and lead the league in expected goals.
United have probably deserved more from their first seven games, while Liverpool have maybe been a bit fortunate. Their upcoming meeting should give a clearer picture of where both teams stand.
Ferdinand has spoken about the fixture, pointing out one area in Liverpool’s defence that he believes United could target.
“I think the right-hand side of their defence, they’re like the right-back area, you’ve got [Dominik] Szoboszlai filling in there at times, he’s not a natural right-back, you’ve got [Ibrahima] Konate, who looks a little bit in and out of form at the moment.
Mount put in another strong performance against Sunderland and seems to be thriving under Amorim. Cunha also made an impact off the bench with his direct play. However, both players aren’t likely to start together at Anfield.
Ferdinand has named both Mount and Cunha as potential problems for Liverpool, but only one will get the nod to start at Anfield.
Amorim picked Mount ahead of Cunha for the Sunderland game, and it paid off. The English midfielder opened the scoring just eight minutes in with a well-taken goal.
That early goal might be enough reason for Amorim to stick with Mount for the trip to Anfield, while Cunha will need to make his case by performing well when given opportunities.

Cunha is still looking for his first goal involvement with United, though he’s had chances. Until he breaks that duck, Amorim may feel more comfortable keeping Mount in the lineup, especially against a side like Liverpool.
