Tottenham loanee Alfie Dorrington has enjoyed a fine loan spell with Scottish side Aberdeen

Tottenham Hotspur have got a lot many things wrong when it comes to the transfer recruitment over the years, overpaying for experienced players and mis-profiling talents multiple times. Having said that, though, the club chiefs deserve some plaudits for identifying young gems from all across Europe and bringing them to N17.

They are facing a crucial summer transfer window where the recruitment has to be spot on to enjoy a competitive 2025/26 season. Besides adding new players, the North Londoners will be welcoming back several players from their loan spells. One of them will be youngster Alfie Dorrington.

A product of Tottenham’s academy, Alfie Dorrington made his senior debut against Southampton at the St Mary’s Stadium in December 2024, coming on as a substitute in the 5-0 win. Despite being in and around the first team for a long time, and senior defenders missing due to injury problems then, Spurs decided to loan him out during the January transfer window.

The lanky centre-back signed a new contract with Spurs until 2029 and joined Scottish side Aberdeen on loan until the end of the season. He has made 16 appearances for Aberdeen, scoring a goal. He was a part of the Dons side that claimed a shock victory over Celtic at Hampden Park in the Scottish Cup final.

Thus, it looks as though Dorrington could be a man in demand this summer. The youngster recently admitted that he’d love to join Aberdeen again if they came back with another loan offer. However, reputable Spurs podcast Lilywhite Rose owner John Wenham wants the North Londoners to send Dorrington out on loan to a Championship club for a year.

“Aberdeen have a play-off game to reach the Europa League,” John Wenham exclusively told Tottenham News.

“If they reach the league phase, I wouldn’t be against Dorrington doing another season with Aberdeen. Those eight European games, at a minimum, would be an amazing experience.

“He started slowly as he was getting up to fitness and hadn’t played much football after some serious injuries. However, he grew into the role, and a lot of fans were raving about his performances toward the end of the season.

“I do wonder if Tottenham see a Championship loan as the better move, rather than another year in Scotland. However, that will be a decision for Dorrington and his family to make, and I’m sure he’ll hold discussions with Tottenham. He will have lots of offers.”

Given a successful six-month spell at Aberdeen, there is no doubt that their fans will be eager to see him wear the famous Red shirt again. As Wenham says, Dorrington would get valuable experience of playing in Europe if the Dons win a play-off game to enter the Europa League competition.

Tottenham may have different ideas, though. After an experience in the Scottish league, they may want the 20-year-old to get a taste of the Championship and get used to the physicality and intensity of English football. For now, no decision on Dorrington’s future is imminent but a season-long loan in the Championship would be right next step for our academy kid’s development.
