Robin van Persie’s departure from Feyenoord has been confirmed following a direct meeting with club officials, bringing an end to his tenure after a challenging spell in charge of the Dutch side.
The former Manchester United striker, who enjoyed a memorable playing career at Old Trafford, was relieved of his duties earlier this month after a season that failed to meet expectations in the Eredivisie.
Feyenoord’s hierarchy moved quickly to inform him of their decision, with Technical Director Devy Rigaux later revealing, as relayed by FR12.NL, how the conversation unfolded.
While the club has publicly framed the decision around performance analysis and data, Van Persie’s exit ultimately stemmed from that internal evaluation process which highlighted a downward trend in results.
Rigaux explained that the meeting was handled face-to-face and with full transparency, acknowledging the difficulty of the situation.
“We delivered it personally on Sunday morning. It was not a pleasant conversation; on a human level, it is the hardest thing there is.
“What also makes no sense is engaging in a fake conversation from our position and ping-ponging matters back and forth, only to then announce that we are parting ways.
“We did it immediately, and Robin responded like a man. He shook our hands and wished us success.
“After that, we looked at how we were going to handle it.”
The decision marks an early setback in Van Persie’s managerial career, coming after a season where Feyenoord were unable to challenge PSV and instead fell further behind in the title race.
Despite the disappointment, the former striker is understood to have accepted the decision professionally, bringing an emotional but respectful end to his time at the club.
Robin van Persie, who remains one of Manchester United’s most respected former forwards, is now expected to consider his next step in management after leaving Feyenoord as a free agent.
The club’s focus has since shifted to restructuring their coaching setup, while Van Persie weighs up opportunities following a brief but eventful spell in charge in Rotterdam.
