Rodrigo De Paul Reveals Argentina Coach Scaloni's Key Role In Inter Miami Move

Rodrigo De Paul left Atlético Madrid to join Inter Miami on a six-month loan, with the obligation of the club buying the player at the end of the agreement. Now, reunited with Lionel Messi once again, De Paul revealed that Argentina national team manager Lionel Scaloni played a big part in his move to Miami.

Messi and De Paul had wanted to play together at club level for a long time, but only now are the two finally teammates. Former World Cup champions with Argentina, the duo will now play side by side for both club and country.

Many specialists believed that Rodrigo De Paul was lowering his level by joining MLS, but his true desire was to play with Lionel Messi — to train with La Pulga every day and witness up close "what it was like to train and play every day with the best player of all," he said.

Scaloni also played a key role in the move, reassuring De Paul that joining Inter Miami wouldn't affect his standing or call-ups for the national team — what matters most, he told him, is what De Paul delivers on the field.

“For me, the most important thing of all is the Argentina national team,” De Paul said. “He was very honest with me. He told me, ‘I know what you can give me on the field. I know who you are. I’m only going to evaluate what you do on the field. As long as you play, and you’re feeling well, I know the class of player that you are.’ “Those are the words I needed to hear to make my decision final.” - He added.

De Paul and Messi Will Compete for Back-to-Back World Cup Titles

The World Cup is less than a year away, and the four-year cycle between tournaments is coming to an end. This final stretch will push national team managers to search for the missing pieces and fine-tune their squads ahead of 2026.

Argentina won the last edition and should be one of the favorites again. This will most likely be Lionel Messi’s final World Cup, and Argentina is expected to go full throttle until the final whistle — just as they did in 2022.

On the other hand, this could also be the last chance for several major stars to end their careers with the sport’s most coveted title: Cristiano Ronaldo with Portugal, Neymar with Brazil (probably), and Messi with Argentina. All signs point to the 2026 World Cup being the final international tournament for these legends.
